  • Yorke, Eyre, The Bight and Desert planning - Any advice would be great!

    Hi all,

I am taking September & October off and heading South out of Alice for 6 weeks. The draft plan is Alice to Adelaide on The Oodnadatta, then over to The Yorke Peninsula (Innes NP for a little while), over to Eyre Peninsula and at Ceduna for the Oysterfest. We will keep heading west along the Bight. We will either head home on the Googs or go up the Connie Sue Hwy to Warburton and across to the NT.

We will be travelling with 3 small children (7,4,2) We will have the camper trailer, travelling on our own and love camping (anywhere).

Any ideas / fun stuff / must sees / advice would be appreciated.

    Keeper

William Creek worth stopping at for a beer. Also a flight over Lake Eyre if you can afford it, although it would be a bit of a waste for the younger kids. Coward Springs and Farina are great places to stop. See my report on our 2009 trip in this area at http://www.michaelmcfadyenscuba.info...hp?page_id=784

Thanks all so far, good stuff.

Andrew - would have been good, but it is a long term plan to get to the Oysterfest! ( i think I talked about getting there back in 1999)

Just come back from the Eyre & Yorke Peninsulas & Goog's Track over the New Year. Ceduna didn't blow us away, but with the Oyester Festival on I'm sure it would come alive. We loved Streaky Bay, Smokey Bay, Elliston, Coffin Bay - basically the whole coast between Port Lincoln and Streaky Bay. We found the towns all had something to offer, the coastline was varied and spectacular. If (when) we do it again we'll spend more time in Coffin Bay area and particularly the Lincoln and Coffin Bay NPs - the scenery is stunning, good beaches and secluded coves, great sand drives, etc.

Goog's Track was a lot easier than we had anticipated and completed it within a day, taking our time stopping for lunch and to look at all the sites recommended on the map. The only thing we didn't do is head all the way out east to Childara Rockhole (about 150 km return trip), instead just having a look at the lake, Goog's memorials and a few other stops. There isn't much shade if it does get hot, but in Sept/Oct it wouldn't be too bad I imagine. Instead we headed out to Glendambo, got out of the heat and into the pool at the pub, then headed back to Ceduna past Lake Gairdner and through the Gawler Ranges NP. Towing a trailer on Goog's (although it is strongly discouraged) would not be an issue, based on our experience, but then again it's always good to check before heading off as conditions may well change. The pub at Kingoonya is CLOSED indefinitely - apparently the owner passed away tragically late last year and his wife hasn't opened it since. There is no fuel from Ceduna to Glendambo, which is just under 600 kms including side trips.

Yorke Peninsula is also worth a look, particularly Innes NP. Again, wish we had spent more time there but couldn't fit everything in - a good excuse to get back again in the future.

Hope this is of some use. Cheers

I haven't but I know a few who have and everyone tells me the Anne Beadell is a shocker for corrugations, lots of people break stuff on that one. In fact Anne Beadell (before she passed away) told me that the track was in such a poor state that she was happy that the WA govenment were looking at changing the name!

                    Cheers Andrew
