I don't have a trip report per se, however it was an eventful afternoon for me.

After a nice day out touring around the area, we were just starting to head for home when I gave a tree stump just off the track an almighty shunt.
I had a quick look for damage and nothing was obvious so away we went to find our way back to the black top.

About 5 mins up the road my dash started lighting up - 4LO light was blinking and the TC and Engine lights were on. I got out as Stewy was pointing under the car to the water flowing out of my radiator. Shit!

Now it was just getting on dark, we were on the edge of the Blackbutt forest and I had a busted radiator and multiple error lights on the dash. I thought I was cactus. Seriously.
We often read on the forum how PP'ers look after each other and I experienced it first hand last night.

The boys were like a well oiled machine, Craig whipped out the tarp and lights, Stewy the tools, Rob had AJ120's magic silver radiator gunk, Richo and Graham provided whatever else we needed (including some moral support for me) and the girls looked after the kids.

The team stripped off the bash plates and got to work fixing the leak. In the end a couple of tins of the silver stuff and about 5 litres of donated water got us back into Blackbutt where we checked on the leak and topped the radiator up.

From there we formed a convoy back to Brisbane which was a good 2 hours away, stopping regularly to check on my water levels. Keep in mind the guys had either families with them or to get home to, it was late and had been a long day, and they stuck with me just about to my driveway.

So again I'd like to thank you all for looking after me yesterday and getting me home, and look forward to buying you all a beer soon.

As a postscript, this morning the radiator gunk was sill holding and the dash warning lights have gone away.
However I gave the car a wash mid morning and must have 'blown' the radiator gunk out as I lost water again and and have resealed it.

          Hi Folks

Well what a day, the original intent was to follow some dotted roads shown on the Geoscience 250k maps from Helidon to Blackbutt on the dirt where possible. No too many photos as I was busy navigating the map and keeping Gay and our grandson Jack amused.

The day started with 7 cars, us, Stewy, Craigm, Trevc, A10, Gumboot and David all meeting at Helidon. As Stewy was a little tardy due to hunting down an Ice Break we had a briefing over the bonnet with the map and got away at 9.15am.

First up we did the 1st leg of the Dirty Weekends #20 trip up Seventeen Mile Rd to the Ravensbourne National Park for Morning Tea. The intention was to take a turn onto Palm Trees Rd and then through Buaraba and the Esk State Forest.

But alas progress got the better of us and Ergon Energy have got the road locked off with a gate so they can harvest trees for power poles. I don't see why they need to close the road to do this but...

We headed off on the black stuff (a blatant waste of taxpayers money) to try another side track that was a loop. After an interesting drive, the lantana just got too thick to cut through so the first u-turn was done (lets hope LFAR and Snaga don't read this post) not an easy task in the situation with seven cars.

The decision was made to go to Esk for a picnic in the park which the kids seemed to enjoy. Then off on the Esk Crows Nest Rd to take some more backroads, We went west along the Bluff Rd and then north on a side road to Anduramba along some nice flowing gravel roads. The scenery was very picturesque, gentle grazing hills for the local beef grazing farms which are very green at present with all the rain.

Turning north the road again was gravel all be it a bit narrower but still a 2 wheel drive road. We got to Nukienda Homestead with the first sign of some more interesting Prado type driving.

This was getting better with the road now turning into farm tracks through the properties and some interesting scenery.

The next sign we encountered kept up the enthusiam

Some more scenery, cows that must have kept Stewy interested, particularly this one that seemed intent on getting in the car with us

We came to quite a steep climb that was a little rutted after the recent weather and then down the other side to Emu Ck.

Next up we decided to take a "shortcut" along some "interesting tracks" through the Benarkin State Forest, it was getting a little late by this stage by on we went undetered. No photos from here as we werebusy with getting out of the forest.

It went a little pear shaped here with several u-turns and the day getting longer. The driving however was quite good through the forestry tracks all a little muddy.

Nearly out of the forest when after another decision making stop we encountered a couple of gents walking along the track. I wound down the window to have a chat about the track with them and the sound of dueling banjo's rang through my ears.

The gents gave us some advice that essentially was "go back the way you came in" after mentioning that were "deer hunting", it was then that I remembered that this area is noted for the cultivation of "herbal crops".

Whilst doing the u-turn (number 5 at this point I believe) it was then that TrevC had an altercation with a large tree stump in the long grass, about 10 minutes later we were stopped in the forest doing radiator repairs with Silver Seal that Gumboot had prudently purchased this week on AJ120's recomendation.

The moon was rising and after dark we were off again to hit the highway in convoy with TrevC in the middle for an escirted trip home. Alls well that ends well and I will be going back to the forest for some more investigating.

It was a great day out (apart from Trevs unfortunate get together with the stump) , with great company.

On that first trip leg it was slow going as the track was over grown and Richo kindly became the
Lantana clearing scout. I bet you had a sore arm from all that chopping.

We had a nice change of scenary to some wide open tracks

Then up onto a ridge, with the 150's trying to get a head start on the 120's ;-)

And later back into the damp tracks in the Benarkin Forest, but I dont have any photos of that. Worth going back to explore that. It took me 2 hours to clean all the mud out today.

Trev was just unlucky, the stump couldn't be seen in the grass.
I am glad we got you out of there ok, Not keen for you to be stuck there with the boys with the rifles...
I reckon a set of 3mm bash plates would have saved your radiator, the toyota plastic stuff just does not cut the mustard. Everyone put in to get Trev going as it was nearly dark, and we were a long way from home and no one was being left behind. Great PP teamwork.

                  Points of interest
                  1. Silver Seal really DOES work as it says. At $4 a tube from repco, no reason that shouldn't be in every mobile tool kit, just in case. Its fast and effective.
                  This is the stuff
                  http://s.ecrater.com/stores/51089/4a...7a1_51089b.jpg
                  2. Carry plenty of water, not just for drinking, but when things go wrong, raidiator issues or getting stuck etc, it's important.
                  3. Craigs LED light is fantastic. I am convert and going to make up one the same. Great idea on the magnetic base, he could move it around quick as a flash. Just dont look into the light because it is bright as!
                  4. Top job Richo on the navigation and diferent route choices. I didnt count ANY u turns, we were just going back for another look ;-)

Great to meet some new faces as well.

                  Cheers

Nice report Richo and thanks again for organizing what turned out to be an eventful day. Close to 10hrs before we hit the blacktop and headed for homes which was another 2hr drive and yes it was a Great day for a drive. Perfect weather, great company, three 150's and four 120's.
As Richo said, we started off leaving Helidon at 9:20 following the Dirty Weekends trip and the first stop was up on the range at Ravensbourne NP.

Following our encounter with a locked gate (cheers Ergon!) we attempted a forestry track that would take a loop through Deongwar State Forest. Affectionately now known as Lantana Lane, Richo's Machete got a good workout This turned out to be "officially" U-Turn 1, as the track eventually closed up.

Lots of waiting for Richo to clear the way...

Beautiful Flower, Horrible Plant! (especially to Black Prados...)

Saw this black swan and her kids "swanning around" in a dam out the back of somewhere...

Wow, what an amazing day. There might not be an "I" in team but there sure is a "PP"

Trev, great write up mate. I was compelled to share your story with a few family members too. It captures one of the many great aspects of the 4WD/PP essence.

Richo, I am counting the U-Turns. After this weekend, you're ahead / I mean behind by two.

Loved the pic of moon over the mountains!

That was an entertaining read and I hope the repairs go smoothly.

The dirt roads were dry and dusty all the way until we reached Benarkin State Forest. It wasn't till mid afternoon that some of the tracks became more interesting with a High Clearance 4wd sign showing some promise. We were driving through some nice grazing country.

Not sure what kinda things happen out here

Another stop for a break whilst Richo and Gay cleaned up after their little grandson. (I think he spilt his stubby or something)

Looking back on Emu Ck that we crossed.

                        Nice little decent

Like the rest of the team, once we hit Benarkin State Forest, little or no time for pics as it was getting late in the day. We thought we were only a couple of k'ays away from the black top to head home when we hit a roadblock.

Richo in discussions with 2 "gentlemen"

So we all turned around (some more successfully than others it would seem and a couple of kay's down the road we got the call across the radio that Trevc had an issue with his dashboard lit up like a xmas tree. Those in front of the pack turned around and we gathered around the casualty and went into recovery mode. What a great bunch of blokes to be stuck out in the scrub with. And without AJ120's recommendations to always carry a $4 cannister of magic powder and that Robert (Gumboot) had taken the initiative and bought some, we would of been towing Trevors 150 out of the state forest to a location for a flat bed truck could take it home.

Stewy, Richo and Robert and Graeme (A10) assessing the situation....

So it was it was an eventful day. Great to see a couple of new faces. I'd certainly like to revisit the Benarkin area again sometime, just less of the lantana next time as I've accumulated some more pin stripes which became evident following todays post trip wash.

                              Thanks guys, fun day....
