Hi all,
Just got back from 7 days in the Vic High Country with my son and his two mates. They took their 4inch lifted GQ & Hilux, both on 35" muddies, I took my non-lifted 09 V6 Prado on BFG-AT's. If think I proved a point to them that careful wheel placement will get you most places the bigger rigs can go. The only damage I copped was a loose side step and some scratched alloys. The Prado ran faultless and got great range from the two tanks. Topped up at Albury & Mansfield on the way down, and Albury on the way back. Had a great time. The weather was great with only a few showers to make it interesting, but most of the time it was blue cloudless skies and cold nights.
Our first camp was at Fry's Hut, a place I've always wanted to visit after seeing it on "A River Somewhere" and the Australian TV mini-series " A far Country". It is part of such a great story. One disappointing issue was the amount of rubbish left by others. We removed what we could handle and buried deep anything that would rust. I don't believe that we should have to pay to access these areas, but if that's what it takes to provide a rubbish collection service at designated camp sites, it may need to happen to keep places tidy.
We were befriended by a family of very tame kookaburras at this site. They would eat from your hand, or your BBQ plate. It was funny to watch the adult bird trying the beat a sausage to death before sharing it with it's family. Must have thought it was a small beef & onion flavored snake.
Visited Craig's hut via the Monument track, Bluff's hut via a very wet muddy track, the 16 mile Jeep Track, Billy Goats Bluff Track & a few other huts and tracks. The only part of the trip I disliked was the Omeo Hwy on the way back. I was starting to get sea sick on the many, many bends and a road crew had large sections of road torn up. We had to keep some distance between us to avoid being blinded by the dust. It was a long painful drive.
We are already making plans for a return trip next year, but this time from the NSW side. Looking forward to it, as it is a magic place to visit.
