Hi All,
We are organising a trip / play around the Rawson / Walhalla area on the 30th June 2012 (If it is not flooded by then!!!), this will be more of a tour of the area with a couple of tracks (bit of a play) and a look around Walhalla and then (hopefully) a play in the snow.
It will not be a "full on offroad trip", more of a "family trip" to introduce people to the area.
Itinerary (Flexible)
1. Head off from RAWSON STOCKYARD BAR (around back in big dirt parking area). ~9:30am
2. Play around in the tracks (criss Cross each other) directly behind rawson, if it is muddy they will be fun but nothing to challanging.
2.1 Eventually "Old Depot Track" to Walhalla Road
2.2 Although there are only a couple of tracks, they will be muddy (but short and not steep) but it will be easy to put yourself in a "bad" position to test out the traction control / DAC if you like (if it is wet)...
3. Walhalla - Up Walhalla Road to Walhalla for a look through town, lots of options here for family we can decide on how much time you want to spend.
3.1 There is a mine tour but a bit long for this trip
3.2 Walhalla Train ride (awesome) but a bit long for this trip (http://www.walhallarail.com/) would highly recommend this for anyone..
3.3 Great history in this town.
3.4 There is pub!! but do we drink before noon?
4. Head to Dam - Head passed Walhalla on Walhalla Road until we reach Thompson Valley Road.
4.1 Good Photo Op's on this road and even a couple of 4wd challanges off the side of the road that people can have a play. Plus there is a good spot where you can actually take the vehicles down into the river for Photo Op!!
5. Thompson Dam Back track on Thompson Valley Road to the Thompson Dam for a look around / photo's.
6. Snow - Continue down Thompson Valley Road to then turn off and head up to St Gwinear for some Snow (There is a VERY good chance of snow here). More Photo's. and play in the snow, bring your toboggan boards if you've got them. (Can be hired on the mountain).
NOTE: If you don't have them, you will need to hire chains at Erica (we pass through it on the way to rawson) for St Gwinear. (~$30 for 4WD). (Thanks Maxjj)
7. Dinner Option - From here people can decide if they want to come back to RAWSON STOCKYARD BAR for dinner and drink (6pm start)
This will be a BIG day if you are only travelling up for only the day, it takes ~2 - 2.75 hours to get there (2hours for us from Lyndhurst).
So if you are bringing kids (I will have two) you will need to think about it carefully, if you stay for dinner you are looking at heading home @ ~7:30-8pm. The food is GREAT at "the Stocky"
This will not be a full on 4wding trip but more of a family day / scouting trip for other trip's down the track..... So keep that in mind or you may be disappointed.
I will upload a route and some instructions on getting there next week.
So Far the following people are looking to come along.
1. Berniebgf- Bernie - Heading up Friday Night and staying the weekend.
2. Callan52 - Johno - Heading up Saturday for the Day
3. JGill - J Gill - TBC
If you would like to come along simply post in this thread and let us know your plans.
