  • Where to go for snow driving?

    Hi there

would anyone be able to recommend any places / tracks / mountains in the high country for some serious snow driving?
Unfortunately the JAMIESON - LICOLA road is closed in winter.
Any feedback / suggestions would be most welcome.

I got a 90 Prado, mud tires and snow chain, also plenty of winter driving experience.

    Thank you all
    JS.

Most of the High Country tracks are closed for winter as you have found.

I am going up on the 9-11 Jul to the Rawson area and we always go up Mt Useful for the kids to have a play in the snow. Check out Miss April in the 2012 calendar.

Depending on how low the snow level is.
The drive from Matlock over Mt Selma to Licola may well have snow.
From Licola the road up to the airstip(near Howitt) is gated well above the snow line.(unless that's changed)
We used to drive up the lots in winter.

Other options if snow is low:
          Mt Terrible
          Mt Erica
Mt St Leonard or the lake mountain road before the grader comes through :-)

You can go up to Mt Skene via the Jamieson Licola Rd however you have to get a permit.

To get a permit you must be a member of a bona fide 4 x 4 club with links to 4WD Australia.

This was bought about by the people that went up there ill equipped and had to get rescued.

You have to file a plan with names & numbers & detail what rescue equipment you have.

Have done it with LROCV a cuple of times.

Maybe we could ask Pradopoint to become a memeber of 4WD Australia?
            Cheers

+1 for Mt. Terrible... I was there last year and found a paddock that was covered in 2 foot of snow... Me still being a child I just had to take the time to do a few donuts in the snow... immature but safe, and lots of fun!
