Assuming that you are planning for this year and the july holidays are nearly finished, and january is out, then me think that the sept oct holidays would be just perfect. The weather is usually good around then, but around the easter holidays can be a good time which gives you will have a little more time to plan

Cant go wrong with Sep-Oct, not too hot, not too cold and with a bit of luck the fish will still be running!!

Unfortunately the best time is outside of school holidays as it is really crowded then, otherwise Sep - Oct is a great time to be visiting SE Qld. If you have time a visit to Nth Stradbroke and Moreton Islands is good as well.

We generally head up in the sept/oct school holidays but it certainly does get busy in the designated campsites so unless you plan on camping in the dunes do yourself a favour and head up a week early to get a good campsite, the kids do nothing in the last week of term anyway and you get a more enjoyable holiday, the temps are usually anywhere between 22-25 degrees so not hot but good enough to enjoy a splash in the water, have fun it's fantastic

I agree.... avoid the school holidays if at all possible. If your kids are still young, take them out of school for a week or so. It is a much better experience when not crowded.

I have been up there a few times, spread out over many years. We went in the 90's in January (holidays). NEVER AGAIN!! Those little fly things attacked every part of my kids bodies and we had a hell of a time. They bit my little boy all over his balls, which swelled up, and he was miserable. He is 18 now and still talks about it, even though he was only two or three at the time. I have been told that those little bugger flys are a regular in January. (just what I have been told)
In 2003 we went up in the Sept holidays. The weather was great, and so was the fishing. It was crowded though. In 2004 we went up up in September agin, only this time we went for the week just before the holidays. PERFECT!!
We will be up there the same time this year, although my wife doesn't want to camp with current batch of little kids we have so we have a house booked at Eurong.
              Looking forward to it actually.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

I've always preferred to go in February myself. In February you're guaranteed one or two of the hottest days of the year and it's always nicer swimming weather for Lake Mackenzie around then. I've been in April before and it was a bit too cold to swim comfortably but then again I find it too cold to swim unless it's 32 degrees or warmer. I have been in January a few times and yes the sand flies were nuts. We were killing them every time they entered our camp site singly. Then 5 minutes later another one comes along. Then another and another. They're around in February too but not quite as bad for some reason from my experiences. I avoid Fraser like the plague during public holidays because you have to pull over on the tracks constantly. It grows old really quickly especially when others refuse to pull over and just keep rolling closer towards you. Plus there's more bogs and more fishermen walking from the water to their cars without looking as you're driving towards them and more people parked on the "Eastern Beach highway" in really silly positions too close to the water.

Once you've narrowed down the month - check the tide times - this is a must for Fraser, as with the "wrong" tides, your travel times can be quite limited....
