  • Goulburn to Canberra?

    G’day,
I’m looking for an alternate drive between Goulbourn and Canberra. I would like to stay on fire trails or dirt roads as much as possible. Any tips would be appreciated.
    Cheers, Terry.

    G'day PPer's

Well I’ve tried to find away from Goulburn to Canberra on the dirt but it doesn't look like it’s possible.

I'm thinking about going from Penrith to the Vic High Country on as much dirt as I can. So far I've mapped out some tracks that will start at Zigzag Lithgow and take me as far south as Goulburn. It looks like tar roads to Canberra. I have mapped out tracks from Canberra to Tom Groggin on the border of NSW & VIC. I will have to get onto NPWS to get an update on these entire tracks to make sure they are open.
A mate is going to map out the High Country so when it’s done it should be a great trip.

    Cheers, Terry.

I used to live at Windellama years ago and there are plenty of dirt roads about but none that take you all the way through without touching the blacktop as far as I remember.
If you want to make a decent trip of it....Probably head out past Goulburn airport towards Windellama and head out to Morton Nat Park. From there head "southish" down and through Budawang Nat Park down to Morurya and through Deua Nat Park. Head west through Tallanganda State Forrest towards Bredbo. Head north before Bredbo, loosely following the Murrumbidgee river through the Tinderry nature reserve towards Queanbeyan.
If you wanted, you could cross the road by actually going through Bredbo, and head through snowy country as alternate route north, and end journey coming in to Canberra through Tuggeranong in lieu of Queanbeyan.

Have a look at Hema 250k maps.... Goulburn, Canberra and Wollongong.
I had a quick look, and I think you can do a lot of it on dirt and fire trails, traveling through some very interesting country. Looks like more than a day trip though.

I just re read your post Terry.

It sounds like you want to do the trip I did with my two youngest boys last year.
The so called Sydney to Mebourne by dirt roads and bush tracks. It is a decent trip, that took us six or seven days driving to get to Vic High Country. The trip starts at zigzag and then heads out through Gradens of Stone NP and then on to Hill End. From there it heads way out to Hay before really heading south. This trip doesn't take you anywhere near Goulburn.

I have the GPS waypoints for the trip uploaded to the link below.
I used a freeby file hosting site, so it has lots of bogus links trying to get the user to install rubbish software. I have attached a doctored image which shows the link to click.
Here is the file link, but remember to click on the correct link when the page comes up
http://www.sendspace.com/file/n21utm The file name is the-adventure-way.gpx

If this is in fact the trip you want to do, post back and I will give some more info.

          G'Day Steve'

Thanks for the info. I have the waypoints for the Adventure way. But to me it looked like it travels on more dirt roads than fire trails.
How did you like the trip, was it a bit challenging?
          Cheers, Terry.
