Yes we had to bring wood from outside. This could be banned in the future as well from a few proposals by park management.

What is happening is the banning of fires in the Witijira NP from 2013, and there is no collecting of firewood there from 2012. You are still permitted to have wood fires in the Simpson desert regional reserve, but they encourage you to use gas or fuel stoves. We had no problem finding wood though.
I returned from a 5 week 8500km trip at the beginning of June. We crossed the Simpson East to West and found it much easier as the ruts from high tyre pressures seemed to be just before the crests on the Western side. I ran 18 psi front, 20 psi rear on BFG KM2's. We managed 5 states,(NSW,QLD,SA,NT,and VIC) and had a great time. 1200 photo's all up. Stopped to give water to 2 guys on 990 KTM's heading East, as they had run out.Used 132 litres of fuel crossing the Simpson in a 3.4L manual. Best fuel consumption was 14.6 L/100, worst, 25.4 L/100 crossing the desert. We came across every type of animal in the wild, great for the kids. High lights were Ayers rock at sunset, Flinders ranges at Parachilna gorge, Hattah, and camping alongside the Paroo, Darling( great yabbying at Louth!), Coopers, and Murray rivers. We spent all of May travelling and had exceptional weather. Had no dramas with the Prado, or the 75 series ute that was with us.
My advice, get out and do it people!
95 series RV6 with almost enough gadgets, (for now...)
