Opal fuel is the petrol variant sold throughout the central lands in lieu of standard or premium ULP. Persons caught bringing ULP into the lands can be prosecuted. Obviously the fuel in your tank is exempt and jerries should be secured so that the locals don't end up snorting the lot. Opal fuel is fine for petrol vehicles and generators. It gets it's name from the colour of the liquid. It doesn't give the locals the usual high that they would get from ULP.

Meant to reply to this age ago. Did the Tanami on the 17/18/19 of June. First day was only to Tilmouth Well where we camped for the night, then the next day was a big one to Sturt Creek free camp area, then on to Wolf Creek crater and Halls Creek. The condition overall was very good. Average speed around 80kph. Some areas you could do 100kph then some only 40kph. It was very green and picturesque. Well worth the drive and was planning to return down this same track but as we have to go back to Kununurra to drop off the hire car and pick up mine will go back via the bitumen.

        Regards Adam
