Border Track

Hi all.
Has anyone ever travelled the Border Track?

Thinking of heading there Easter next year.
Any info and best time of year to travell and track conditions would be very helpful. Also if its off road camper friendly.
I have heard its a must do.

Hi Ben,
I did the border track last June and found it pretty easy all bar a couple of big sand hills on the one way section. The main hold up is waiting for other people to try and make it up with road pressures in thier tyres :evil: . From memory i had my tyres at 18psi but you could probably go down to 15 and walk straight up the tough dunes which have usually been badly chopped up by people not airing down. Also worth checking at Wyperfeld national park while in the area (its all free camping too ) I went there the year before after an inch of rain and that made things interesting. The only problem I can see with a camper is backing down the hills if you dont make it first go.

Gday Ben,

I did it earlier int he year, must have been queens birthday long weekend, twas very very busy! As with the other Ben, we had to wait for other groups to get over dunes. Apparently alot of people had been trying to get over in 2wd which dug it up and made it pretty rough. It had rained before we did it so the sand was pretty good to drive on. If its been really wet the bog holes at the southern end can be pretty treacherous. We by passed all the bad ones and turned off before we had to do too much mud stuff.
We had a campertrailer in the group. Most dunes they did ok with lowered pressures, but most of the tough ones had a chicken tracks.

Thankyou for the feed back guys.
I will be down that way for about 10 days (heading down from sydney)
Any sugestions on any other things to see,do and drive in that area.
I have been through little derert before and found that great but it only fills in 1 day.
I am starting to see by the feedback that its a good drive but it wont fill me 10 days away.

You could always do some camping on the murray, there are great camping spots all the way along. There is the big desert and wyperfeld on the south side of the mallee hwy and the murray-sunset/hattah-kulkyne to the north. There is mungo national park on the way home??. If that doesn't keep you busy for ten days you need to take a deck chair and some liquid refreshments :lol: . I hope this gives you a few more ideas

Have you got a route in mind?
The Grampians and Pyrenees are a little further south and east but are great, but i guess the high country is just a little further....... :roll:

I would definantly agree with Ben about the murray, but at easter unless you know a spot it can be hard to get a camp, in my experience anyway.
