  • Wich trip in january?

    Hi all,
I probably will fly to Australia from Italy in January, just to accompany a relative for a business trip. While he works, I would take this opportunity to rent a Land Cruiser and join a group for a 10days long off road trip.
As we will land in Sydney, what do you suggest regarding it? What about Simpson desert? Is it too far from Sydney?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and useful links.
    Ciao Mario

The Simpson Desert will be closed during January, extreme temperatures out there mean its not a place you want to be that time of year anyway. Are you interested in seeing the "outback" or happy to stay in the mountains? The High country is close to Sydney and plenty of good tracks in that area, to see the outback you are going to need to travel further and once agian extremely high temperatures are possible if not likely in central Australia that time of year, talking 45 degrees C and more. Guys on the east coast can probably give better advise on places closer to Sydney.

    Cheers Andrew

Being a Queenslander I'm a bit biased but if you've got 10 days, come up to Fraser Island. You can hire full camping set ups in Noosa or rainbow beach and camp up there or stay at one of the resorts but you could easily fill in 6 or 8 days up there and still have a day or two to travel back and forth.

I agree Fraser Island would allow you to experience the beach, the forests and the lakes all in one location.

Never having been in AU, I really don't know what would rather do.......mountains or outback?
crossing the outback would be a dream.... but totally understand temperatures troubles...!
I usually travel to Sahara, but never in summer!
So, how far is Fraser Island from Sydney? Where I could hire a Land Cruiser? Are there 4wd trips agencies right there, that might help me?

          Thanks guys!

Brisbane is 1000 km away and although you could enjoy the coast along the way I would recommend not missing out on the wonders of Fraser Island.

Catch a flight to Brisbane and hire a 4x4 there before making your way north. This way you can spend more time off the black top and more time discovering the wonders of Fraser.

Just a couple of places you can hire. Google and you will find more.

Search 'Noosa 4wd hire' on google. There's dozens. You should be able to fly into maroochydore airport and taxi to noosa. Most of them will give you good info on touring Fraser but some also do tag along tours as well.

Mailed Noosa 4wd hire today... They quote 200$ per day for a Land Cruiser V8..
Had a look to their web site but there has only shown a Land Cruiser 100 descripted as V8 equipped.
Is that the 4.5 V8 turbo diesel engine? Here in Europe, only VDJ200 is equipped with this engine.. What about that?

The other way to go, if your hesitant about organising things yourself, would be to hop on a tagalong trip.

Vic Widman is Sydney based, have a look at his site, he can arrange vehicle hire as well.
