  • Wilbinga noobs

Hi everyone, I hear everyone talking about Wilbinga and am keen to get out and have a look. I have a stock 150 and some recovery gear (snatch & shovel) and a mate in a Pajero but we are both 4x4 noobs. Any advice other than letting down tyres ? I have done a bit of driving around lano on the beach but nothing serious.

I had a look on explore Oz and the route looks straight forward but I'd prefer a better map. Where could I get one, or is it relatively straight forward and I am unlikely to get lost ?

Have a squiz over at 4x4Earth.com.au I had a quick look and found this http://www.4x4earth.com.au/tracks.html?site=369_Wilbinga-sand-bowl-

No real track logs. Perhaps some local PPers can offer more info for ya. Good luck

I normally head out to Wilbinga quite a bit and it is pretty easy to find your way down to the beach and back again. Haven't been out for a while with the wife being pregnant. Easiest entrance would be off Damepattie Drive in Two Rocks. Good spot right when you get in to air down and good tracks to the beach and bowls. Google Maps gives you a pretty good idea of the tracks out there. I pretty much follow my nose, but have got caught out on a track about 20cms not wide enough. You'll pretty much have mobile coverage to be able to use maps on your phone most of the way, but don't rely on it. I have downloaded MotionX GPS for my iPhone...it allows you to download satellite image tiles of the area to use offline to follow. Handy $0.99 investment.

I have a stock 120 and I have never gotten stuck yet. I always stick to 16-18 PSI and plenty of momentum. I regularly head out with a stock Paj, Grand Vitara or by myself. The beach can be quite soft and the Vitara's clearance is its only problem. There is also plenty of other people out there to help if you get stuck and have a chat to anyone leaving when you get in about the conditions.

The only other thing, is that depending on what shire you are in, they have different rules. If you are in the Shire of Wanneroo (pretty much up to the second big bowl) they don't allow you to stop along the beach. Rangers on quads will give you a move on as they are frequently out. Further up is the Shire of Gin Gin. You can stop, fish, bring the dog and have a great BBQ on the beach here.

Have fun, it is a great little place so close to the city. Might bump into you out there once we start heading out again.

Easy access from Two Rocks as mentioned. My 150 is still stock, I drop down to 20psi, and no problems at all.
First time I took the Prado there I couldn't believe how easy it went thru it all.

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

Stock vehicles with 16-20 lbs won't be a problem at Willibinga. air down once you reach the first dunes. I usually enter in the forested section on the highway. It's marked with a green tire with the track name on it and hard to miss. It's pretty hard to get lost in there. Keep the ocean on you left. As you near Moore River there is a fence line track that takes you back to the HWY. You can continue to seabird from Moore river if you like.

Take all of your recovery gear and a bit of water. It's hot as hell right now.

Fantastic spot you will have some fun there. Stock vehicle will be fine. Just be a little wary if you head down on the beach can be very soft in certain sections. We went for a fish on the weekend and witnessed numerous folks getting bogged and unfortunately there was even a roll over. Many of them probably lacked experience and know how but i would suggest you will need to have lower than 20 psi on the beach

Thanks Geoff, my trip yesterday was cancelled as I didn't manage to get an aircompressor in time so Thursday sounds like a great idea. I am picking up an adapter for my scuba tanks that will recharge my tyres so should be ok for air as ARB are not open until the 7th !
