  • Callcup Hill

Thought this may be of interest to those that may not have heard about Callcup Hill, or those that have and havent been there yet.

Callcup has been known as the Widowmaker because if you went down and couldnt get back up and couldnt get out via the Summertime Track or the Yeagarup Dunes you were in a bit of strife. Callcup comes in two stages, just when you think you've beaten it, you get to the top and find you have to do the same again.

Pics and video (of stage one) from New Years trip.

    Its steeper than it looks.

Cooling down at the top - it was close to 40°c away from the coast

Just getting off the beach was a mission in itself. View from top

    Great spot ,
We had the car fully packed ,4 x passengers, tires down to 10 PSI and struggled in the old Diesel to get the 2 km to the top. One of the other guys , Justo, 120 petrol Grande , Ended up having to recover an old HILUX by pulling it behind him all the way up.
It made a good spectacle, as the Prado had all its wheels spinning the hole way . Those V6's have plenty of grunt when you plant your foot.
    Lucky for him
Did you drive down the beach to where the river meets the ocean?
    Cheers Russ

I did it years ago on a Telethon Trek co-driving my mates Landrover Discovery. I can hear the screams now "Bushbasher drove a Landy?" It was for good cause and we had a cute divorcee as a back seat drinks waitress too.

We were down there over new years just gone. Its a brilliant trip in and out. Have been going down there for years with my old 95 series and yeah it was a struggle for sure. Had my new D4D auto 150 this year and it made it look easy! Hi Range, tyres down to 12psi sat back and buried the foot. No problems at all...!

Russ - we hit the beach and went left to where the river comes out to the ocean. Great spot for all the young kids to have a paddle and for us to have a couple of coldies!

Just doing a search and found this, my first time down there in a 120 v6 so hopefully all goes well in a couple of weeks.

I have done these tracks a few times and I have to say the V6 doesn't have a problem. Even tried some of the steeper dunes towards the top and had to back off to stop getting airborne. Just make sure the tyres are down to about 15PSI or less and its easy. Lots of fun and a beautiful location.

Just got back last night from a great trip down south. Bought the Prado 2.8 GXL auto two months ago and thought Callcup Hill would be the ultimate challenge here in WA. Went in from the Ritter Road access (camped here for 4 nights), crossed over the Warren River (sand bar, easy) and then faced the hill. Tires down to 10 psi, low 4 and off we went. Made it up the first stage with ease but second stage stalled 20m from the top. Reversed down and watched another Prado make it to the top. Changed to high 4 and S2, and this time no problem. Great location for a week away.

                Awesome @paddyb

i never posted after my run but it was a great trip there also. As you 10psi v6 L4 S2 all the way first run both stages so was very impressed.

yup this was my favourite trip - down yeagarup dunes to the beach, cross the river and up the callcup hill. Tyre pressures are very important here - I had the old grandcraps then and they were awesome for this stuff. 12psi and high 2 gear made it first time no problem. Good fishing around there too.
