I was in South AFrica a couple of weeks ago and went out 4wding a few times checking out the wildlife. Their safari vehicles have interesting modifications.



It's not a Prado, but ideal to go searching for lions in.



I thought this table was interesting. Probably couldn't do it here, we'd have a rule against it.

Im guessing the taller roof is so you can stand up in it?

No, they cut it off at the window level and put in some seats up that high, then add in a dodgy roll cage that is mostly there for the canvas roof to keep out the sun and rain. They have the seats so high so that you can see the animals through the scrub better. Here is a shot of another one at a client's private game farm. These are all over the place.



This one is a converted ute, but all the others are pretty much the same.

Yes, that is the most common setup you will find in most game reserves for "safari's" as overseas tourists like to call it. Us locals just go for a game drive not a safari.

Hi Jeepster,

It was a great trip, no real 4wding, but great fun anyway. We went out on a client's 7000Ha game farm and when we got to a nice hill for some 4wding, the driver chickened out and turned around. I asked him he'd let me have a go, but no luck.

I'm going back in spring again for work and will add on another week or so to drive up the east coast for a bit. Can't wait, it is a great place to visit, I'm lucky I get to go there for work!

Hi Halfpast four - see if you can fit a trip in to the Sani Pass on the border of KZN and Lesotho. Great drive if a bit hairy.

As for the Safari modifications, a friend of ours has mounted a dickie seat onto the front left bull bar for his game guides to sit on. Not sure how the powers that be here would like that...
