Looking at doing a crossing in July, probably leaving Mt Dare 14th and taking a bit of a slow zig zag route across, getting into Birdsville 5 or 6 days later.

Hi Guys, we are hitting big red just for the fun of it then turning around as the QA track (?) is closed apparently.

Question is, is a flag necessary to go there and back?

I am not an experienced "desert" driver so appreciate any proper/detailed advice. I was informed the leader of a convoy would only need one. Not sure if that would work if you're leaving a gap and there is oncoming vehicles. I am all for safety and would like to do the right thing.

Was forwarded a newsletter from SA government and it says the following (apparently same track as QAA, don't hold me to it though.

"K1-Warburton PAR into the Simpson Desert is CLOSED until further notice due to flooding"

Fair enough, the reality is that as you crest even a small dune, you will be blind for a couple of seconds, I'm sure we all appreciate when the oncoming driver has a sand flag. Just makes things much safer.

There is a thread on here for home made sand flags. Or you can by one for about $130.

QAA Line is between Big Red and Nt border and is not closed.

Just did the birdsville inside track, then a track which links up to the end of the QAA track. It was great, roughly about 25+ dunes and big red at the end. Had a blast, great conditions. Had to tow to back and do it all again after my mate's jeep broke down at the start of it.
