  • Captain Billy's Landing

Talking to some folk during a club trip on the weekend about our trip to the Cape later this year. I mentioned we were planning to stop at Captain Billy's Landing for a few nights. The response was not positive due to the windy conditions there. I would appreciate any comments from fellow PP's who have been there. Cheers Jim

I didn't stop there, but the Developmental Road all the way up & down in the Cape had a pretty decent easterly when I went. When driving you feel the car get hit with some strong cross winds from the east. The bushland on the western side of the road for the entire length of it was coloured red for 20-30 meters in from the dust blowing that way off the road all the time. The eastern side was green and untouched by the dust. So that tells me that the eastern coast would be pretty windy the whole time. Hence the name Chilli Beach for Chilli Beach. I've heard the wind there can make it a bit cool. When we were at the tip it was a 32 degree day but due to the strong easterly it reduced the temp to what felt like 25 degrees. I'd say it'd be a good bet that it's windy at Captain Billy's landing during the dry season.

We stopped there in July 2012. The first day it was beautiful, about 5 knott breeze and clear. Had a look around the caves and the beach, had a fish etc. Was so nice we decided to stay another day. About halfway through that night it blew up to about 40knotts (same as what we experienced further south at Chilli Beach) and it was relentless. Spoke to the good people at Bramwell Junction, and they explained the latter is pretty much the norm throughout the dry season. Nice place for a night though.

I was up there during August/ September 2012 and found anywhere along the eastern portion of Cape York was extremely windy.
If it was me, I would spend more time on the western side of the Cape such as Vrylia Point or Penefather Rivers.

in 3 trips to the Cape, only twice the wind was up. 1991,2002,2010. Always worth the drive to see. Try Chillie beach, camp in the most northern spots as they are protected from the wind. Also Archer Point near Lions Den. Again camp on the north side of the light house.
Any time away from home is better than a good day at work.

Stayed 1 night when we did the Cape by motorbike in August 2008 and Capt Billys landing was a very windy place then -found Chilli Beach much nicer.
Also would not bother with Lockhart river again either.

Just got back from The Cape and all the Eastern side is effected by the trade winds, they are unavoidable. We spent a few days at Cape Meliville on Bathurst Bay and it was quite pleasant as it faces north, also there is a waterhole at the northern end that is fresh water and great for a swim, there were crocadile slide marks near the saltwater but didn't see any.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.
