QLD: Cooloola and Freshwater Day Trip and Lunch at Rainbow Beach Saturday 22nd June

Hi Guys,

Short notice I know but the tides are great for a day trip up to rainbow beach this weekend so I'm going to have a run. Basically I'll be heading up the beach from Tewantin. If the weather isn't too bad, we'll run up to the point and walk up to the top of the hill for a look around and some morning tea. Then double back to freshwater track and take this into Rainbow Beach for lunch at the surf club. Depending on how long that takes and how the beach looks, I'll either go back the same way or just take the highway.

Not a particularly challenging run but a nice easy day trip. I haven't been up there since the tides exposed the coffee rock but I'd be surprised if a stock prado couldn't handle it. Low tide is about 12:30 so the plan will be to meet on the side of the road leading to the ferry at tewantin at about 10:15am Saturday morning (22nd June 2013). If we come back along the beach, we should be well off the beach by mid afternoon.

If it wasn't for my "soccer dad" duties i'd say yes for sure. Bit of a cruise, then a nice feed with a view, what a good way to spend a Saturday.

Tiny....was going to say yes but my roof's leaking and tomorrow morning's the only day a guy can make it. Selling coffee and cleaning gutters...you'll always have work!! Like you mentioned with a bit more notice I'd have made a weekend of it earlier but I think this one day outing is a little too much for the little'un, although you would be travelling further. Hope to make it another time in the near future?

Mate, I'm staying up at the wife's parents place at the Sunshine Coast for the weekend, otherwise it might have been too far for my kids too.

Great day for it. The tracks were pretty easy though. Apart from a few bits of coffee rock between third cutting and teewah, my sister's mirage could probably have done the beach and freshwater. With the rain the tracks were all firm and smooth for the most part.

Nice and sunny though so we ran up to the point and walked up the hill, had an ice cream from the ice cream truck (I swear he was following me) and a bit of a look around for some pumice stones. The beach was littered with little pebble sizes ones all the way up to the point, not nearly as nice looking as usual. Up at the point there were mounds and mounds of them. Didn't manage to spot any whales or dolphins though, the sea was a bit too choppy.

We were running late by then so decided to take our time and not come back via the beach. We went up freshwater track and stopped to walk down to the lake and have a look. Got into rainbow beach about 1 and had a leisurely lunch at the surf club overlooking the beach.

After a quick run down onto rainbow beach for a look at the coloured sands, dodging a wedding party that was filling the beach like a herd of cows, we headed home and decided to try taking cooloola way instead of the simple highway route. After about 20 mins it was getting a bit slick and slippery on the wet clay and when I saw a patch with knee deep ruts and slick wet clay and mud holes that I couldn't see the other side of, I chickened out and turned around. Without a winch or a second vehicle, darkness approaching and with my little kids in the car, I decided to play it safe. Next time though I'm going to stick the coopers on and organise another vehicle (preferably with a winch) and make a day trip out of it. I don't know how much worse it got but it looked like it'd be fun if we were prepared to tackle it.

Anyway, with my tail between my legs, we headed back to the highway and the 2 hour drive home. All in all, quite an enjoyable day. Didn't take many photos but when I get back to a computer I'll post a couple up.

Part of the reason for going was to give the new drawers a thrashing and see how they held up. They went pretty well. I think a few tweaks to reduce some of the rattling would be in order but I'll post in my rig build about it in a few days.

I'm told some of those bog holes could swallow a Prado Tiny, so a good move that you didn't attempt them on your own. Sounds like a nice day of driving. Need to get up there and do that track again sometime!
