  • SEQ Daytrip (trip report), Sunday 27.01.08 GH Mtns

Had a great day today guys n gals... thanks for coming out

The day started as planned, 8:00am at the BP at Caboolture.
There, Zowie and I (Snaga) met up with Kelvin (wengnuts), Rick and Matt (masso) and we also managed to pick up a stray 120... Martin and his son (spender again) so once we were all accounted for we headed off to the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout to meet up with the rest of the gang.

At the lookout we collected Nicole and the billy lids (pml120r), hope your feeling OK Peter... sorry you couldn't make it... then Craig (rogerdodger) with his car full rounding out the crew for the day.

So the roll call for the day...

    snaga (90 series)
    wengnuts (GQ poooootrol)
    masso (120 series)
    spender again (120 series)
    pml120r (120 series)
    rogerdodger (80 series, overlander forum)

Airing down at the lookout we headed straight onto the dirt tracks and headed for a track following the power lines. The last time I was on this track was after leaving the fun stuff with Kel and his outerlimits mates but this time after a few hundred meters we came across our first boggy section.
So boggy in-fact there was a bike stuck good and proper up to the engine. After a few failed attempts from him and his mates to get out we offered a snatch strap and a Prado to attach it to.
I was at the lead so I lined him up and after a few tries at various anchor points on the bike we slowly skull dragged the bike out.

Once he was out we all performed the beautiful dance that is the 6 car U-turn as the track past the boggy section got even worse with ruts and drop-offs so to avoid any damage it was on to option two... the Glasshouse mountains run from the 'Dirty Weekends in SEQ' book.

Backtracking almost to the lookout we made a left that was the start of some nice forestry roads, an interesting short track that I hope wasn't someones driveway some time back. So much rain has been through the GH Mtns that most tracks were down to the rock base with a few little spots to flex the suspension.

Back on the 'tour' track we continued on north around the western side of Mt Tibrogargan where we came across another boggy section (this one is part of the Dirty Weekends Tour)... a little more getting my feet muddy and I thought I had the best route through but wheels in two sets of ruts meant a little bit of sideways travel but it was all good... looking back through the pics it looks as though everyone tried a different approach and all got through no problems.

A little further along the track notes we came to a clearing with two water crossing options to take us up alongside Mt Tibrogargan. The one Martin and I took was actually the impassable (without a snorkel) option last time I was there... the one wengnuts and a few others took used to be the bypass option and I think it was probably the harder of the two now... neither proved to be a great challenge though.

Only a hundred meters or so later was the crossing we weren't sure about and as expected it has been dug out quite deeply from all the attempts and after some lengthy discussion and thigh high wading in murky water we decided to take a small, shallow bypass to the side.

Moving alongside Mt Tibrogargan we came across a trail that took us to a bald top hill with a great view of a the countryside and few of the mountains that make up the Glasshouse Mountains.

A few options were available to come back down this hill so we had to try them all... more of the 6 car pirouette (sorry, 5 car... Rick went the right way to start with) and a quick play was had there.

From here the plan was to back-track the way we came as further on in the same direction was the end of the forest.

For some reason we felt tougher on the way back through that big, deep water hole and after some more evaluating I decided to pass as the water level was about at intake height but Craig in his 80 series gave it ago.

Oh, so close but the step up at the exit stopped all forward motion and it was quick smart onto the (preattached) snatch strap and a quick yank out with thankfully no water making inside the car...

... unlike this bloke... another group out but with very different priorities

On the way back through the boggy section the difference between my ST's and Martins tyres (HT's?) was clear... Martin lost that vital ingredient... momentum
A quick snatch in some very sloshy muck and he was out and back on solid ground. All once again through that section... again everyone trying a different line and it was back to the power lines for some lunch and to evaluate the rest of the afternoon.

After a long day yesterday Zo and I were keen on a early arvo finish, Kel had to leave at midday to go to work so Kel, Rick and Martins cars aired up and headed home.

Craig and his gang put on some lunch for us... nothing like a fresh chicken, avocado and salad sandwich on a hot day to tame the grumbling tummy... Nicole had the kids entertained and fed as well.

After a quick break and a chat Craig and I thought we'd check out this 'Big Red' track Kel was talking about... sheez!! was our first reaction. The rains had certainly had it's way with this track as it was all ruts, 3' rock step ups, and some tight navigation around a rocky outcrop and some trees... but who did we find here...

Same bloke... so the arvo turned into watching this guy for about half an hour or so until he blew out his bead on his front right tyre (apparently there was some mud in the bead... you could hear air escaping every so often before it finally blew).

Interesting to watch someone change a tyre on a 45deg slope but got it changed and he backed down the hill but the word over the dog and bone was he wasn't going to give it another go

After that we all headed back up the hill and by that time it was about 1:30 or so, so we decided to call it a day and after a quick chat went our separate ways home.

Thanks heaps everyone for coming along... we had a great day, no damage to any vehicle or egos ... except now my driveway has a coating of 1" thick clay/mud ... gurney today... wash tomorrow... or the next day... or the day after

Hope you all a great time... see you on the next one

Thanks everyone... yep, it was a great day. Nice and easy day with great company

Zo did a great job behind my camera... was good to have a navigator and someone to take pics of ME finally 8) I spent the day either behind the wheel or behind the video camera... no guarantees on the footage though ops:

Sorry Nicole, we found a motor bike number plate on Saturday but no centre hub. We'll have to go back and look for it 8)
              Cheers, Leon

                  ops:

Although we were heading north and west of Mt Tibrogargan... it was Mt Beerwah that was close to us... just loaded the trackback routes into Ozi and noticed Mt Tibrogargan is actually further south east from where we were.
I think the pointy one in Zo's shots is Mt Coonowrin (Crookneck)

                  Sorry 'bout that
                  Cheers, Leon

May be a bit off track from this particular trip report, but I did the dirty weekends trip through the glasshouse mountains on New Years Eve, right after the 2 weeks or so of rain. I have got a few pics I will load when I get a chance. Boy was it slippery!! By the looks of the photos of the creek crossing the water has now dropped quite a bit since we went through. In the photo of the Patrol crossing the creek you can see a ridge of dry ground beside the car. When we crossed it that ridge was about a foot underwater. Might be a bit too much of a test for the memory banks but do you remember if there was still a large stick standing up in the midddle of a large hole that was just to the right of the Right side track. I hope so because I fell in the bloody hole so I searched for a big stick/branch and drove it into the hole to mark it was there.

                      Hi Steptoe,

If that ledge was a foot under water which way did you cross...???
Yep, two sticks in the center of the water...
                      these them??

the bigger of the two from memory might be where an old tyre was the last time I went up there.

This was last time we were up there... wrong line taken

And an old shot for Kelvin... any tears yet 8)

                      Cheers, Leon

                        Snaga,

We were travelling west to east and took the same side track that you guys took. It was relatively deep but the bottom was quite solid sand so there was no issue of getting stuck. The rest of the crossing had quite a muddy bottom and was too deep to cross without a snorkel anyway. I also remembered I have a short video that my wife took as we crossed.
                        http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=lnUMw47yBg4

I noticed that you mentioned you got caught in 2 sets of wheel tracks. I did exactly the same, and ended up very sideways. By the bottom of this hill we were at least 60-70 degrees sideways to the track. You can see by the bonnet angle that when this pic was taken we were already sliding sideways. I think my wife got a bit nervous about getting stuck in the slop and forgot to take more pics as we went down. The guy stuck at the bottom thought we were going to hit him, but there were no problems I managed to climb into the right set of tracks and miss him comfortably. I am guessing this is the same place you were talking about.

Ah yes... all the same spots. That last shot looks very familiar, now I understand your dislike for mud Kel 8)

Where that guy is stuck most of the top soil on the tracks either side of the mud hole had been washed away and is down to rock.

Nice little vid... I managed to get the download cable today so hopefully I'll have some to add soon.
