  • NSW Outback - Cameron Corner

I've got about two weeks off in Dec. Instead of sitting at home, I was thinking of going for a drive and corner country looks interesting. Planned route is Sydney > Broken Hill <> Milparinka <> Tibooburra <> Cameron Corner.

    My questions are -
Would stock standard Prado ok for it?
Is it a good time to go? was looking at the temp - it is around 39' with lots of friendly flies, apparently?
Do I need a second spare tyre as some suggested?
    Suggestions/ ideas?

it will be hot at that time of year, your Prado will be fine for the trip, and with good tyres at the right pressure you should be right with 1 spare.

you'll be fine but be prepared for the heat
my only sugestion is, if you have two weeks dont stick to the hi-ways, get onto the dirt tracks. I went from the hunter valley to cameron corner the other month and from Duneedo to Cameron Corner than to Broken Hill I managed about 95% dirt & a new pub each night.

Cameron corner is a nice trip, but in summer? I think I'd drive down the coast to Gippsland Lakes or something.

You'll see 40+ maximums. It's already pushing up to 40C this week.

I'd take a second spare, you probably won't need it, but if you do...

Having spent time out there for work in the middle of summer, I can tell you it is very, very hot. Better off travelling down to the high country or perhaps along the coast to Great Ocean Road.

I have to agree with most here, yeah its a great place to go, but you risk stinking hot weather in December. That's always going to put more stress on the vehicle and if things break you are in for an uncomfortable time until help arrives. Flies are bad out that way at the best of times, they are going to be in plague proportions at that time of year.

It wouldn't be my first choice of places to go in December!

Literally just came back from Cameron corner a few weeks ago mate. It was VERY hot, and I hate to say it as it's such an absolutely awesome drive, I would NOT be going there in December. It was 39 degrees and this was in early October just a few weeks ago. It would be unbearable and uncomfortable in my opinion.

Stock Prado would be OK I guess, but there is a lot of wild life during the day to be aware of with no bullbar. However I went a different way (dirt the whole way from Bourke) so saw a lot more jumping around (mainly emus and goats).

You'd probably want a fridge going in that heat (esky in the heat, no thanks)... you want good tyres for sure and keep your pressures right. Roads were great but they'd be very hot that time of year. Wouldn't worry about a second spare, plenty of places close by to help out. Also had telstra reception nearly the whole trip with a 7.5db nextg antenna but i'd still recommend a sat phone as the roads will be quiet that time of year.

Anyway, feel free to ask any q's if you're still unsure.

              Matt
