Great write up and pics!
We probably crossed paths as we were there the same time. We stayed on the Ocean Beach, though.
My eldest daughter is 23 and the first time we hit Fraser was when my wife was pregnant with her. Our daughters grew up beach camping on Fraser and they still love it. The dingoes weren't so bold then. We used to go up once sometimes twice a year till life got busy, still I'm no expert as the island and it's tracks keeps changing all the time. Went there one July ... have never been so cold in my life.
A lot of what you have written is valuable advice. I got stuck like your friends on the track out of Kingfisher, giving way to a bus. Most vehicles passing couldn't ,even if they wanted to, stop and help as it was up hill and soft sand. I dug away as much as could and laid 2 TREDs on the back and 2 AutoXS, I bought from Aldi (LOL) and that got me out. AutoXS were skewed into the sand about a foot. The sand, man, it was hot. I was running 18psi, next time 16psi will be the go.
We go once every camping trip to Kingfisher for lunch and to use the day tripper's showers. I might give it a miss next time if I'm travelling alone as the track is badly chewed up, soft and rutted.
Heaps of Pumice washed up on the beach from some volcanic activity in the Pacific and heaps of dead birds on the beach. Apparently the birds were migrating from Tassie back to Russia and got caught in a storm; they were so exhausted they died.
On the island, I've driven a Hilux, Forerunner, 90 series Prado but I wasn't real impressed with the ground clearance of the 150.
On advise from some of the more experienced people on this site, I turned off the TRC and anti-skid. I believe it gave me more momentum. Hard to play around with the vehicle by yourself in case you get bogged but I left it in 'Drive' most of the time.
Returned on Boxing Day, tide coming in, to Inskip barge. The track was so chewed up, I was worried I was going to get bogged towing a camper trailer. The 150 kept bottoming out all the time. Foot was flat to the floor.
All in all, great weather, great time with the family, great fishing, caught some worms off the beach, very relaxing ... I'll be back!
