  • black mountain-mt malloy-port----prados can swim

well what a amazing day we had!!!!

we met upat maccas, myself , kevin and crammy with his brand new shiney d4d..from there we headed up the Karanda range and turned off the black mountain rd were we stopped and set tyre pressures..

from here we headed into the tropical rainforest were we saw almost immediately a good sized cassawarie, but it was in the trees berfore camera was ready!!

the tracks were nice and wet from rain and crossed some easy water crossings.

but then we found some that we would never get across as the river was raging and the near verticle solope on the other side would have been nuts!!

as we progressed through we had to take

care of some trees to continue so lucky we had a axe.

after black mountain we stopped at thhe pub for lunch and a coldie (as you do), and headed through mount malloy were we found the track from hell.. this thing was nasty and we discovered that the prado could swim.
there were streches of axle deep mud pits that went for hundreds of metres, not just one or two these things went for km's all culminating into a water pit that when we went through it was a quater over the windsceen and to say nerves were a understatement.
    .

crammy droped his brand new d4d nose first into the pit from hell and i thought it was buried ,but he punched out the other side and we went through after him.

we then decided to go further might be risky, so back throught the slop we went , and headed down to port douglas.

we had a great day even though or rigs coped some minor damage (nothing to serious i hope kevin ).

well done Crammy on really christening that new rig mate .
    joey...

p.s we will be organizing another run somewere in the next month so cairns drivers stay tuned....

Wish we'd get some rain down here to make some mud.

That axe looks like too much hard work hence I always take my chainsaw

Yep, it was an absolutely awesome day. The new Prado earnt it's 4x4 wings and proved to be a good swimmer too!

None of us got bogged in the rediculous amount of mud we hit although we got close a couple of times.

Airing down at the start of Black Mountain road.

Driving through Black Mountain road saw a good mix of rainforest, wildlife and fresh air.

As above with Joey on the axe, a little roadwork was required at times. A minor adjustment to a fallen tree was required to get through.

Kevin airing back up before getting back onto the black stuff.

Now the trek through the savanna begins! A big mix of water crossings mud, mud and... sh!tiloads of mud!

Joey showing a patch of mud who's boss with the STT's.

      Kevin getting a little loose!

      Joey dipping his feet in.

Driving along the trip we saw dingos, wild dogs, pigs, lizards, snakes, a cassowary and the list goes on.

      Joey's clean.... errrrr number plate?

A bit of a clean up was required before we got back onto the main road. We pulled out bundles of grass wrapped around just about everything!

Bevan with his estimation of how deep the scariest part of the trip was. A bloody big water hole/ creek crossing that my prado floated half way across!

      My shiny new prado :P

All in all it was a bloody great day, nothing got too damaged (not yet anyway. wait till the missus sees the car! ops: ) The car performed flawlessly and the AT3's still haven't let me down yet. Thanks to Joey for organising the trip, Bevan for being the support/camera man and Kevin for being the man with everything!

      Cheers,

      Crammy

It was a great day out. We will try to be a bit more organised next time and let you all know about future trips before we go

The damage was fairly superficial, bent mud flap and side step.

Here are Crammy and Joey getting over the log that got me

And a couple more pictures for Prado's playing in the mud.

Great trip there guys Lucky the axe was handy for those fallen trees.

I'm amazed it was only 1/2 way up the windscreen with all the rain we've been hearing about up your way.

                  Top report guys.

After all that happened yesterday, I ended up busting something when I was cleaning up the Prado this morning.

                      Oops, had a blowout!

                      Thank god the prado survived!

I took me about 5 hours but I think I have gotten most swamp weeds out, after pulling all the bash plates off up front and the front wheels. Think I am going to have to take the guard off from the forward fuel tank as well. That swamp grass went every where, nasty stuff to clean up :? Have gotten half a bucket of the stuff after I though it was all clean.

Haha yeah I know what you mean Kev, you think you've got it all then you have another look and there's more! It's like it's still growing under there!

How's the sidestep and muddy looking? Replacement job?

Spent a couple of hours this morning pulling the side step off and apart. Very efficient mud collector...Front corner of the metal base had bent up and the front screw mount for the foot tread had snapped off. Flattened the metal with the judicious use of a hammer and block of wood:wink: . Then used some araldite to glue the broken screw month back on. Finally pushed out the bent bit of plastic. End result doesn't look too bad for the side step, but I am planning to replace them with something more substantial anyway. The mud flap doesn't look too bad from a distance but will call toyota tomorrow and see how much a new one is.

                            Moral of the story...

Take a bit more time to work out the driving line before tackling fallen trees

Great write-up lads. Sounds and looks like a great day out. The cassowary was a great find. The rainforest is just beautiful - very different to our stuff.

Kevin - just spent the morning pulling my sidestep apart and doing the same reconstruction after last weekend's play over here in Perth.

It's amazing how easy it was to bend into this shape and how much of swing with a mallet it takes to put it back  And all that damn plastic - araldite was my friend too!

                              Mine came up alright too.
