  • Australia day trip Mandorah for the Darwin mob

    G'Day All,

At this stage I am planning a trip for us Darwin mob to Mandorah to visit the WW2 crash site of a B25 bomber (correct me if I am wrong) on Sunday 26th.

I will post more details Thur or Fri once I do a visit to the site. From Darwin it would take about 1hr 30mins to get there.

    Cheers

    Winston.

I could but that would mean not paying Derek for his wheels.

Ok I checked out the site yesterday and it will be fine to visit on Sunday. If it's raining it will just make the track greasy but not boggy. See the following photos I captured yesterday:

The track is like this most of the way. The surface is hard and rocky in places. You will bounce around a bit if you go too quick and airing your tyres down to at least 30 psi would be a good option. I have two air compressors, max trax etc.

This is the turn off. You should be able to see a track behind the sign. This leads down to the beach and is about 2kms long.

This is the track at 1.6km just before the beach. The track itself is firm but go off the edge and we will see you in about 5 months.

So at this stage I propose the following:

              1. Meet up at Noonamah Tavern / servo at 9am (it's about 22kms from Palmerston on the Stuart Highway). I will be in the white Prado with Crafty Divas advertising.

              2. Depart Noonamah no later than 9:30am (to conduct meet and greet etc)

              3. Head to Mandorah (about 80kms from the Cox Peninsula / Stuart Highway turnoff) Estimated time to arrive at the turnoff to the WW2 site is about 1030am give or take. We will sit on about 100km/hr

              4. Road conditions are very good considering the rain we've had. There is roadworks around Berry Springs, there is patches of water on the road about 2/3 of the way there.

              5. Couldn't see any potholes,

              6. There is horses on the Cox Peninsula Rd in particular near the Belyuen Airport and community. So keep an eye out.

              7. If you have a UHF we will use channel 10

              8. Bring lunch otherwise we will drive past Wagait Beach supermarket https://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=sh...,0.111494&z=14

              9. And a link for google maps of where we are going. https://maps.google.com.au/maps?sadd...=h&mra=ls&z=11

              10. Depart time from Mandorah around 1pm. Steve, you suggest a detour on the way back?

Open to suggestions etc. As far as our freeloader, MLC, where are you staying in Darwin so we can find out who has spare seats etc. I live in Farrar and have one spare seat. I will also have a 60lt ARB fridge if people need to put some stuff in there.

              Winston.

i will be staying out at Batchelor for the week end. I will most likely meet up at the Cox Pin turn off, or Darwin River Dam Turn-off. i know a shortcut from Batchelor to DRD but there are a couple of water crossings which may be too deep for me. Otherwise i will have to back track up the highway to Cox Pin turn off.

detour may not be a good idea considering time left in the day. we can still have a look. Wild Horse Plains, turn off is off Litchfield park road and track finishes near DRD. Awesome Drive.

I am staying at Fanny Bay. Bayview St. (You lot have the weirdest suburb names and street names. You need to drive down Dickwart Street to get here). No, seriously!

I can bring drinks and get food at the supermarket. I don't want to impinge on any family, so let me know if anyone is solo, otherwise enjoy the day guys.

                    Lol. Fannie bay... Dickward drive...

Have you tried pronouncing the other suburbs?
                    Try:
                    winnellie
                    Wanguri
                    Wagaman

If the town planners were smart, they would have made sure if you were coming from Dickward Drive, you'd need to pass through Durack before entering Fannie Bay and Driver. A by-pass road would take you to Virginia, next to Hidden Valley and adjacent to Moulden. For those that cannot wait and are after the express-way, you would need to go to Fly Creek located just below Middle Point, there you'll head to Johnston and take Fred's Pass before reaching Tumbling Waters.

Using the local vanacular, I think the town planners were "taking the piss"

Now I will not be able to sleep with all this excitement. A trip away and meeting the great MLC all in one weekend.
What more could one ask for? Oh and it is a long weekend.
