    Dave,

My 2 cents. Just avoid school holidays if you can. Summer will be hot and wet (hard sand on the track?), winter will be cool and dry (soft sand?), never a bad time to go by all accounts apart from the aforementioned school holiday crowds.

I went in August so the nights were cool but days nice and warm.

My preference is for around June, as long as it is not holiday time. By then the wet season is over and as it is not too hot the sand is not too loose. The water on the beach is also still warmish if you feel like a dip or get wet fishing.

Thanks guys, agreed school holidays would be extremely busy. Hopefully SA holidays are slightly offset to the Qld school holidays.

Just need to star the planning, oops, and saving

Last time I went up was over Easter & school holidays. Easter was busy in the southern part of the island but quiet north of Indian Head. We stayed at the northern end of the island until Easter was over, then ventured South. The rest of the week wasn't overly busy - the day we went to Lake Mackenzie there was only one other family, and we were the only ones at Central Station when we went there.

I'd usually say after September school holidays, but after the last trip in April that was great weather too.
It's a great spot the main thing is that your going & try to avoid school holidays.

School holidays are busy but it's normally when we go (Sept hols mainly).
Just avoid arriving/leaving on the weekends. We always come and go mid week and the crowds are a lot less for the ferry and travelling up and down the beach. Last year we were surprised how quite it was. We went the 2nd week of Qld hols. The locals said the first week was packed.

Week before Easter always has been good for us, no crowds, but still warm.

We are going over easter this year.

Can anyone tell me if a stock prado would be fine? I have found conflicting advice from you need a 2" lift, to a stock prado would be fine and everything in between. Sometimes its hard to sort the crap from the truth...

A stock prado should be okay, just be aware that in the busy periods the inland tracks will be cut up and at times you most likely will be dragging your belly.
I find that in the summer months (without rain) the tracks are very soft and cut up whereas in the cooler months (its QLD, we don't have winter ) the sand is firmer.
Last august I was there for 2 weeks without any issues, the tailor were still running, not very busy, plus you had whale watching as a bonus.

I enjoy going around august as it is not busy, the fishing is good, usually the weather is great and cool enough at nights to have a fire and relax.
Plus the cooler weather is good for doing the walking tracks & it is still warm enough for a swim in the lakes or just a lazy drift down Eli.

A stock prado with tyres around 20 psi will and is very capable. I took a Rav4 their in 2003 with a 2 inch lift and had no problems.

Been there loads of times, busy times, quiet times, summer, winter.....its a great spot....anytime.

Went last Easter with my daughter, son in law and grandkids....thought....."oh dear this will be terrible".....to be honest not too bad. more people sure, and I had to wait for the next ferry BUT no big deal.

Love it anytime, except when its absolutely pouring rain (and yep have experienced that as well)....in fact we were told to evacuate as a cyclone was coming.

One of the best spots in Oz, although must say these days prefer more remote outback Oz!!

                              Enjoy
