Anyone got any fuel consumption figures for a manual diesel 95 series on the Canning Stock Route? I'm trying to work out how much extra fuel I'll need without going over board on the roof rack. While I will be travelling with others, it will only be me in the vehicle but I will still have the usual full load.

I was hoping two extra jerry cans would be enough, but some actual consumption figures would be helpful. Figures on Exploroz indicate around 6.3kms per litre. The plan is to fuel up at Kunawarritji, heading south to north.

A bunch of different vehicles on the over lander forum did the trip last year, they can probably give some accurate numbers based on conditions and fuel stops etc

Sorry can't help with a manual 95 series BUT my 150 Auto used 137 Litres from Wiluna to K-Mart last July.

I actually took 60 litres extra to add to my 150 in the tank (just in case)...we were very lucky some really bad weather went through about two weeks before we started, we had the remnants of that down south with some very boggy spots, two weeks earlier could have been a lot of fun and seen a much higher fuel usage.

I think about 140 litres from reading on www.exploreoz.com was about average for a 4 cylinder diesel....so I was very close to that figure.

Its a fabulous trip BUT beware the corrugations, they are the worst I have experienced, I didn't need them BUT take a spare front and rear shockie....we literally saw a dozen vehicles pulled over waiting for replacements.

We opted to pull up (often) to let them cool down......if you don't do that and don't have spares BE WARNED.

Happy to answer any other questions you might have via PM

      Cheers and good luck

And which Kmart would that have been? Or do you mean Kunawarritji?

Yep just our "in house" name for Kunawarritji.....a few of our group couldn't spell it so we abbreviated to K-Mart...sort of forgot myself with the post!!

Ha ha! First time I have heard it called that. Certainly ain't no Kmart. Not even close to Coles, or IGA, or 7eleven. Don't go there on the wrong day or at the wrong time.

I did it in my 120 manual D4D last year in June/July towing a camper from North to South. Averaged around 21 l/100. Filled up at Kunawarritji and then got all the way to Willuna using just 2 of the 4 Jerry Cans I was carrying.

                Hope that helps.

... and you will do a lot better than that if you have no camper. I found the top part -Well 33 to the top had more and steeper dunes but used more fuel [ but is shorter than the bottom bit. ]

Cheers for the info. I managed to pick up a Tracklander jerry can holder, unopened in box over the weekend for $150 so I'll be able to carry two jerrys at least.

Unfortunately it seems all of the big name holders wont fit the 20 litre black Rheem jerry cans that I have (laying horizontal), so I might have to go and buy some more to add to the seven I already have.

Be careful with the Tracklander jerry holder. I have one and most of my plastic jerry cans don't fit because they are too long. My metal jerry fits as well as one of my plastic water jerries.

Yeah, that's what I've found too. I don't really want to buy metal cans as I probably wont use them again but I have found some smaller plastic jerrys at Bunnings that might do the job, I've just got to add a bit of packing to the holder.

I had three Jerries on the roof (Rhino Heavy Duty Bars and a Rhino Basket)...plus a second spare and rim, plus 4.5KG of Gas, plus about 20KG of spares in a space case.........believe me I could NOT wait to get rid of that diesel, dropped one in the first day, another the next, and another the next. I definitely wanted to get rid of that weight on the roof as fast as I could.

Our fuel usage on the northern part (even through the Dunes) wasn't as bad as the south, but we did go through after some rain so it was a bit muddy and difficult at times.

Great memories though, what a trip!!

Ha yes in no way an IGA or anything similar, we did however manage to get some frozen bread, a little fruit / veg (expensive but nice) and a few luxuries like some Ice Creams on the day.

Nice people there as well, Bill and .....I forget the lady's name

Just a quick update, been back a couple of weeks after doing it in the reverse to most going, north to south. Unfortunately I broke one of my rear springs heading into Durba Springs so had to nurse the old girl down to well 9 were I headed out to Glen-Ayle station and then into Wiluna, and then a slow drive home to Perth on the bitumen.

I also had a few issues with the after market immobiliser playing up and cutting fuel to the engine. At one stage before diagnosing the problem I had all sorts of visions of my decaying vehicle being photographed on the side of the track by future travelers, but fortunately we were able to bypass the immobiliser and I was back on the road, only to break the spring.

The Canning is not for the faint hearted, it is relentless and will find the slightest problem with your vehicle and then nail you.

Overall my fuel consumption was just under 15.3 litres per hundred kilometres and the old 1KZ-TE actually used less fuel than a short wheel base 150 series (138 litres) on the Bililuna/Kunawarritji leg.

If you think you the price of fuel is getting out on hand check out my fuel bill at Kunawarritji.
