its a Dec 06 D4D grande on the original airbag suspension (self leveling, adjustable height and ride firmness)

Ok. You might want to check the airbags for ageing cracks at full extension. This requires the bottom of the airbag to be removed from the axle for the check.
We will be on the Gibb late July / August this year. Agree with other comments re tyre pressures and speed. We use 25 psi in car and trailer on all trips with corrigations and to date had no issues. Speed down to 3 x pressure and all safe.
On the problem of moving to the left and the oncoming cars not slowing down, we travel in the middle until the oncoming slow, then move to the left. This has saved many a screen.
The UHF will be on 40 if you see us call out.

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.
We plan to hit the road heading north next week and hopefully tackle the Gibb late June, so will follow this post with interest too. What's a reasonable time to allocate to the Gibb River Road to experience a range of sights / highlights?

4 or 5 days to take it easy and visit all the gorges should be fine. I've done it in one day including swimming at 2 water-holes. 2 days is a bit short. You can spend a day at Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge alone. Another day at two at Emma Gorge and El Questro. If you want to also visit Mitchell Plateau then that's another 3 days. Kalumburu?

Thanks Bushbasher. We've been doing lots of reading of articles we're saved from 4WD and Campertrailer magazines, Ron Moon's book, on-line items etc about the Gibb River Road and are really looking forward to experiencing the area. And a break in Broome is definitely on the plan. I'm currently looking at the 'Preventative D4D Maintenance/Measures' thread on Pradopoint and am only slightly nervous about the potential for something to go wrong. However, the Prado is in good condition with 143000 on the clock, had the injectors replaced under extended warranty at 70000, is maintained by the book by Toyota and has just had the timing belt replaced 7000 ahead of time. It's done the Cape, Central Australia including the west and east MacDonalds, the Flinders Ranges and the Birdsville Track, 6 trips to Fraser as well as lots of highway kays without a problem so here's hoping our run of good luck continues.

We did it over two weeks but we took it easy, stopped lots and that included a trip to Mitchell Plateau with a night at Drysdale river station, day to get there, two nights stay and a day back. That portion was easily the worst corrugated at the end of the dry season. But this was back in 2006
Also spent a couple of nights at Mornington Wilderness Sanctuary. (El questro was too expensive at the time)

We were up there four years ago early in the season, had to wait a week at Kunanurra for the GRR to open, then because they said it had been graded from end to end we took out 2.0 tonne off-road caravan across. It had been our intention to camp and drive back around for the van. Ran 25PSI on the vehicle and 30 on the van and the only tyre we changed was giving somebody a hand on the track. Tyre pressures down and speed down and you are unlikely to have issues with tyres. NEVER give up the middle of the road, as noted the opposing traffic will make you pay. I did get a comment from a copper once over the UHF saying that in SA vehicles usually keep left. very sheepishly I told him I used to do that but I got sick of drivers not slowing down. He did not say anything else and he did not turn around either.

Just got into Kununurra today after a week out there on the Gibb with 340 odd(some would say very) cyclists. The main road is pretty good at the moment with the roughest being Ellenbrae to the Pentecost. Had a great time as usual and will definitely be back again next year. Ran into Brad(can't remember his forum name) from the SA GTG at ElQuestro but didn't have much time to chat as he was just leaving.
Can't we just keep travelling?
