Hi All,
Well we decided on the spur of the moment to take a trip out to Palm Valley today. Absolutely glorious weather and a nice cool breeze to go with the endless blue skies and sunshine.
Still a few flies around just to keep us in check.
Anyway it has been a while since I have driven all the way into Palm Valley and I must say that it is defintiely 4 wheel drive only on parts of the journey especially from about 1 km short of the Ranger house. There was also quite a bit of soft deep sand on the lead in to the park. Most of the drive is done down the river bed so it is made up of loose rock and sand. From the Ranger camp grounds onwards to Palm Valley the track becomes pretty rough and a lot of it is driving on eroded and worn bedrock, it is very difficult to judge this due to there being little contrastwith the sun overhead to show the dips in the rock and they can be quite nasty too. We bottomed out a couple of times, each time the wife says " We need that lift kit." - " Yes dear" was always my reply.
She even says to me as we start heading off the tar, " I think you should air down cause it looks like it might be a bit rough." I smirked and replied " Oh, she'll be right I don't think theres any need to air down for this trip."
ops: Boy was I wrong on that one! So just to save a bit of face I let it go for another couple of k's then announced " Oh this is where I had intended to air down."
Anyway the camp grounds just past the Rangers house are pretty well appointed. They have built a really good toilet block and there are shade houses with tables etc and gas BBQs.
The scenery is absolutely stunning as usual, we saw a few brumbies and Roos, there were a few Prados down at PV when we arrived as well as a cruiser and a Patrol.
Here are some photos of our jaunt through the the Finke Gorge NP and Palm Valley.
This is the road into the Finke Gorge NP

The road takes on different colours and textures.

So as there is no doubt where we were.

Spectacular scenery abounds here.

Cycade Grotto

Part of the walking trail into Palm Valley

The 4x4 track can be a bit of a slog in places.

However it is well worth going to the trouble of getting into Palm Valley.
Cheers
