  • Bribie dash, Saturday arvo

After visiting the 4X4 and camping show at the RNA showground on Friday I realised that the only safe way to carry the maxtrax was outside the vehicle... so, while at the show I visited the Rhino stall and had a good chat to one of the blokes and decided on a set of HD Rhino bars for the Prado...
Show special was 10% off retail and you paid and collected from a store you nominated... (I like that idea as it gave me a chance to a little bit of research on here )
Friday arvo I collected the 'Group Purchase' Maxtrax from Chopper and then it was off for the FIL's birthday BBQ at our house

So, Saturday morning I did a quick ring around to a few stores... all were either doing the same show special or none at all so I headed off to ARB Capalaba to get myself a set of Rhino Bars.

We had already planned a picnic/bbq/fish n chips visit to Bribie Island with some friends but after the Maxtrax purchase it turned into a beach run and back via the inland tracks.

I finished installing the roof bars at 12:10pm (was supposed to pic my wife up from work at 12 ops: ) but as it turned out she ran overtime anyway (she never finishes on time  )

If I forgot anything.... too bad  8)

A mad dash to Bribie from Brisbane to meet our friends... only 1 and a half hours late ops: ... and after a quick chat and catch-up it was over to the beach side, air down and onto the beach.

We didn't follow any of the usual 'points of interest' we just drove... our friends we're so stoked to be 4WDing with their Prado we just kept driving

    This was the first stop...

Maxtrax strapped down and enjoying the view

After that brief stop we continued onto the northern most, 4wd part of the beach and stopped for another look around... and some more piccies.....

Looking south from the waters edge.

Another pic of the Prado... enjoying the shade 8)

Some of the old buildings about...

From this point the only way back is south, so we drove slowly looking for the boardwalk to the old bunkers and other building but missed the entrance... if it was still there... as we then found the Northern access to the inland track and it was here we found the sign to the Old Fort... 5klm round trip  the book says 300mtrs :?
With two toddlers in tow we gave it a miss and continued onto the inland tracks.

The sun was setting and was making it hard to drive in convoy... so I gave a good 5 mins gap between cars and the viability got a little better.

The inland track was very boggy in parts... this section isn't a good indicator but it's the only section I stopped to photograph.

I actually got the poor girl air-born (I'm not just referring to the Prado either  ) once or twice  so 30klms/hr was the max speed for a while.

We got back to the rangers hut at about 4:30pm and then headed back to Bongaree for a fish n chips dinner with the setting sun over the Bribie Passage as a backdrop... what a way to spend a Saturday afternoon
    Cheers, Leon

Even at dusk it was getting hard to read the tracks... some sizable spotties would in order I think

Mind you... it's hard to bog the Prado in the first place

I go to Bribie alot (well did last year - the permit has little use this year)

The recentish high seas and perhaps a bit of maintenance have made the southern (Woorim) entrance to the beach very easy. I reckon I could get through it without dropping the tyres. Not done the inland tracks yet.

However, I always drop to around 22 psi - never had a problem and never looked like getting stuck.

You can air up at the petrol station (BP I think) at the main roundabout that you turn right towards Worrim after exiting the bridge and driving straight around the first roundabout you come to. However, this is often fairly busy so I often get off the island and head back towards Brisbane. After the long stretch of the dual carriage way finishes there is a servo on the right which rarely has anyone using the air compressor.
Silver 2005 GXL Prado, Petrol, auto, gold plated rated recovery points, 60ltr Waeco, Vacation Camper, Gunyah side shade, 265/65 17R Pirelli Scorpian ATR tyres (x4) and 1 new Grand Crapper (spare), Max Air II plus still lots of recovery gear!! And PradoPoint sticker!!

Wish list - ARB steel bull bar, 2 inch lift, dual battery system, snorkel, milford cargo barrier, black widow rear draw system and rear lockers as well as new bash plates for the ones I have trashed. Oh and yes a 150!!!

We both ran 20psi that day... My Coopers and their Grandcraps.
Never looked like getting bogged though. Actually when I had a play with the Maxtrax we weren't really that bogged

The northern access cutting to/from the beach was quite soft and some of the sections of the inland tracks were also a bit soft but nothing even came close to stopping us.

The worst part of the inland tracks are the repetitive humps... got airborne a couple of times ops:

Thanks guys, I haven't been on the sand at Bribie but I had heard that it was softer than the beaches further North but sounds about the same. Must get a permit and go for a run one weekend.

I should add that we were there on the out going tide with plenty of hard beach to drive on. Close to the dunes there were big stretches of quite boggy sand.

Bribie was the place I popped my sand driving cherry before I ventured off to Fraser 2 days later.

                          Oh the memories.....

                              Bribie permits

The following link provides all you need to know about permits

                              http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/parks_and_for ... tion_area/

A weekly pass costs $33.90 or an annual pass $105.80 - to the best of my knowledge there are no day passes but a quick call to the EPA would sort that out for you

Whilst you can book on line I just go to Bongaree Caravan Park and get the permits from there - open most days. The map on the website shows where it is.

Enjoy - we do not go enough
