  • Yulara via Mulga Park Road

    Hi all,
Heading to Yulara next week from Sydney via Port Augusta.
To make the drive more interesting I was looking at taking Mulga park road from just south of Kulgera Roadhouse up to Curtain Springs then back on the tar to Yulara.
Has anyone recently driven this road that may have some idea of what to expect.
I will be towing an off-road camper and want to spend the night along the way.
    Cheers.

It's like a gravel highway. The roads are generally pretty good out there and well maintained.

I drive the road every 2-3 weeks or so and right now it's in pretty rough condition but nothing a reliable 4x4 can't handle. I'll youtube a video tomorrow of how the road was last time I went down it.
I run my tyres around the 26-28 psi mark and that seems to handle it well. Well worth the drive though, some fantastic scenery.
Just be aware (it's not hugely signposted) but if you decide to cross over to the SA side alcohol is not permitted so just be cautious.
Feel free to PM me with any questions.

It's a nice drive and to get off the blacktop is always good
Beware of cattle heading west from the highway and after the road heads north there can be roos, but it's probably too cold for the roos at the moment though.
Technically you can't head into SA as that is the APY Lands and permit only country.

I'm planning the same section in a few months. Wondering if there's any nice spots to overnight between Mulga Park and Kulgera?

              Thanks for the replies guys.
Has anyone travelled the road in the past week...?
Also I have heard that a permit is required.
              Is this true...?

Also I have heard that a permit is required-
                - no permit needed for the NT side of the border. The mulga park road is all on the NT side so no permit needed.
                - not travelled in the last week but my missus did it 2 weeks ago it was still corrugated as. Most likely still the same as it's only graded 6 monthly

There are a few good spots there. Can't recall exact distances, etc. mostly flat areas but great scenery driving. If you are up the top end of it near mt connor be aware that there is rumours the Curtain springs owners put road spikes down for tyres on the entry roads to stop unwanted people. If you head down the road opp mulga park station there is some great spots there. Just don't cross the SA border due to alcohol/permit restrictions. The border isn't signposted but the cattle grid is it, also if you notice the road get decent then that's SA roads. NT roads are awful.

                  Thanks Jimmy,
Are there any spots along the road where camping is not recommended due to issue with indigenous folk...?

Not that I know of. The whole road stays in nt which is all station land. The APY lands are the sa side so nt side for camping should be all ok

                      Hi all,
Just got back from our trip but did not drive this road as locals say it's in really poor condition.
