  • Current information on Newens, Wolgan Valley area

    Hi all,
We are planning our return trip from VIC and are looking at a quick trip into the Wolgan Valley from Lithgow on Saturday 02 Oct. Does anyone have any current track into or trip planned into the area?
Nothing too adventurous, more the scenery and breaking up the blacktop drive.

    G'day Skinny,
We went into Newnes as our first stop from Sydney to the Gulf back in April. The road in is mostly bitumen. Just past the Wolgan Valley Resort entrance it becomes a good quality dirt road (2WD no probs) to the old Newnes pub and the National Park campground (about 10km).
The pub is no longer licensed but I believe it has some accommodation, there is also a kiosk but no meals. The pub runs a camping area across the road with showers and toilets behind the pub. Not sure what they charge.
We stayed in the National Park campground about 1km past the pub. It's free and has good pit toilets, it's also pretty spectacular.
There are some really nice camping areas on the other side of the river - accessible except when the river is up.
The old shale oil extraction plant is definitely worth the trip in. There is also a walk up to the old rail tunnel, now better known as the Lithgow Glow Worm Tunnel, but you'll need at least 3 hours for the return walk.
    I hope this helps,
    Lee.

Being the long weekend it'll be very busy at the old hotel & camping area but it's definitely worth spending some time there, the ruins are a must see. This website has all the info you need: http://users.tpg.com.au/newnes/index.html
          Cheers,
