Well, since we hadn't planned any big touring trips this year, the opportunity came up for us to take the family away in the 2nd week of the school holidays for a week up at Cania Gorge Big-4 Caravan Park..... This would us the chance to visit and do the walks in the local Cania Gorge NP and also for myself to do a bit of exploring up through Kroombit Tops NP and locate the WWII Bomber plane wreck "Beautiful Betsy" which had only been located back in 1994.
Decided to take the Caravan up this time instead of tenting it, so this ment taking the missus Prado as I don't reckon my old D1 Disco would tow it very easily.... Left late Sunday and reached a Free Camp site on the banks of the Burnett River in the town of Gayndah.... great little spot but u can only stay for 20hrs...... The following day was a easy drive up to Cania Gorge Big-4 Park where we setup and relaxed the rest of the day while the kids enjoyed the
local waterpark.
The following day was spent doing most of the walks in the NP before returning to the Van Park to again let the kids enjoy the waterpark and bird feeding....The following day was a early rise and headed off to do one of the explore trips I had been want to do for a while - Kroombit Tops Circuit - we headed back down the road where we turned off and headed nth to enter the Kroombit Tops NP from the sth. A great little drive chris-crossing the creek numerous times. We Reached the Lookout for smoko and took the usual scenic photos out to the East - Fantastic views overlooking the cliffs and the surrounding mountains..... Realised that we actually had phone coverage, so took the opportunity to call family back home.
From the L/O it was off to do the 4WD Loop Track which would lead us to the WWII wreck of "Beautiful Betsy". Upon reaching the carpark, we walked the 800mtrs until we came to the wreckage - It was spread over a wide area, but still plenty to see and located the 4 engines scattered around the crash site. After taking heaps of photos, we were off again to complete the 4WD section of the loop track, passing "The Wall" campsite and some other nice spots to stop and check out the views. We eventually completed the 4WD section of the track (nothing hard about it) and continued nth, stopping at the other camping area "The Griffith Creek campground for lunch.
After Lunch, it was back on the track and we turned onto the Razorback Track which lead us west along the ridge line and slowly down to the valley where we continued to follow Kroombit Creek, chris-crossing it numerous times on our way towards Biloela where we refuelled and made the trip back down the Hwy and back to our campsite..... A very big day (7.30am - 4.30pm) but definitely well worth it and another one that I can cross off my bucket list.....
Once our week was over and it was time to head home, so I decided to take a different way home as I found a interesting site on the map.... an old Train Tunnel that was built early in the 1883 to service the area. The tunnel was called Boolboonda Tunnel just north of town of Mount Perry. This turn out to be a great find where u can drive your car through and hear all the bats flying around as u drove through.....From here we just headed out to the Hwy and turn sth towards home, reaching there around 4.30 in the avro.....
Not a very big trip that we are usually accustomed to... only 1462kms @ an avg of 16.2ltrs/100kms
