We are doing the longer route though, not just following the French line across. 600km roughly. I'm going to stab and say 20L/100km roughly, 120L of diesel without any problems. It just feels a little tight...

5 long months away now and still thinking about it every single day.
Still haven't decided a route across the Simpson. I think that won't get decided til April. We have 2 weeks to play with so plenty of time out on the tracks and it looks like we might have another Hilux to add to the group. Going to try maintain the max 2 person per car ratio. The plan with mine is to remove the 2 seat part of the middle seats and make up a rack to hold some water jerry cans. Looks like I'll be the only person with an awning on the trip too. Might have to charge admission!
As per my vehicle setup I'm fairly happy it will do the trip fine, just want to chase a solar panel as my fridge is fairly power hungry.

thanks! Did you see us coming down the hill or stopped by the side of the road with one my passengers throwing up... turns out I probably should have gone a bit slower round the corners... oops!

Nah you were coming down into North Richmond. I was headed up to the Kurrajong Heights Hotel.

              G'day everyone,
In June this year a mate and I are going to attempt to walk across the Simpson Desert pulling a walking cart.
We're planning to take off from Dalhousie Station and walk parallel to the French Line to Poeppel Corner then alone the QAA line, finishing up at Big Red.
But we're in need of help... We had a vehicle that was going to do food and water drops along the way, but the owner has pulled out, we're doing this trip on a shoestring, and hoping to raise money for charity, so I wanted put out an appeal: would anyone, or a number of people, be any chance of dropping a survival box of food and water along the French Line during their own trip (it can be months in advance of our trip). I know this is asking a lot given the space and weight of each box - but we would pay people to do it.
We are after a total of four drops - each spaced 100 kilometers apart - and each probably buried about 100m from the track. Each box would include water (probably around eighty litres each) dehydrated food, and possibly some medical gear. And we'd get the GPS coordinates and come along and get them.
It doesn't need to all be done by one group - it could be split between as many as four different groups and we'd coordinate with each. It is vital though that we can rely on each drop and the GPS coordinates.
If you can help - please give me a shout. My email is [email protected].
              Thanks for your time!

Haha good question, but no, I am not a German backpacker.
120D4D is on to it, I am a reporter here in Adelaide.
And yes this is a crazy adventure!

No, you are not Crazy at all, especially if you know what you are doing..and I'm sure you do ... I was just joking, because the last backpacker when went for a walk out west ended up eating flys and nearly dying...but very different circumstances. June is a great time of year in the desert, and I'm sure its a worthy cause. I'd help you logistically if I could...and I'm sure other folk will lend a hand if they can. Good luck.

Jumping back to the original topic. For those who have done this crossing already how would you describe the general surface you camp on,hard sand, soft sand, etc

While the dunes were soft the flats away from the track tended to be a bit firmer with a bit of a crust, normal tent pegs were all that was needed, although my nephew had some you beaut spiral pegs that he drilled into the ground with a drill. Got some on order right now actually.

Only a month away now! Getting pretty keen. Will anyone else be out there at the same time? Mid May?

We're coming through the Simpson with a Variety Charity 4wd trip. Will be in the desert from the 21st of May for a few days.
