  • Deep Water National Park

I am keen on a trip to Deep Water National Park. The intent is to stay over at Burgara beach and visit 1770. On the way back cover Deep Water. Keen to camp two to three days at Deep Water.

I have never done a 4WD trip. - so i have no idea what "tire down" means - guess it is synonymous to deflating the tyres a bit to increase the surface area and traction.
My 3 year old is allergic to mosquitoes, sand flies and anything that flies and bites.

    Any tips will be appreciated.

It's a nice place with one road that goes through the park. If you want do a bit more 4wd when you there take a trip to Eurimbula NP, pretty close to Deepwater.

I do think there are bugs out there, but it will be hard to find a place without those... Bring bug spray....

You are right, it means dropping the tyre pressure to have better traction on the sand. Go down to about 20 psi and you should be good.
I assume that you don't have a compressor in the car, so maybe keep it a little bit higher and see how you go (like start with 28, if too hard drop to 25 etc), that way it is not too low when you're back on the bitumen and looking for a servo to pump them back up...

Thank you. Your assumption is just right. I have seen a air compresser (150 PSI output) at Kmart. Keen to buy it. Do you think that it will help inflating when i hit the road? Hoping the air compressor will work with 12V!

        Do you mean this one?
        http://www.kmart.com.au/product/air-...-150psi/748149

Yes, that will work with 12v - you connect it straight to the battery with the clamps you see on the picture.
You get what you pay for though, output of this is 35l per minute. An ARB compressor has an output of 87 l/m, so almost three times as much. I have the ARB one and it takes me about 10 minutes to air up, so I assume that with this one you would be busy for a good 30 minutes....
On the other hand, you can't go really wrong for $20, especially if you're not using it much.....

Edit: just noticed one thing: hose is only 1m, so you need something to extend that otherwise you won't be able to reach your wheels....

Yes that is the one i was keen on. I will get an extender for the cable. Depending on how everything goes will buy ARB.

You will need every kind of bug spray! We went there and it was hot as hell- the camp sites are down behind dunes and amongst heaps of trees and the mozzies and sand flies were ridiculous, we planned to say 3 nights and only stayed one and left about 5:00 the next morning, as mentioned there are a few different site so just pick carefully

Why don't you get some day-trip experience on some of the beaches closer to home, say on Bribie if you're north Brissie before venturing further north. I wouldn't waste my money on a $20 pump. You'll be all day reinflating 4 tyres and it won't last long. You can get a proper one around $100 ~ $150 mark.

True. Point taken. Deep water cancelled - courtesy sand flies and mosquitoes.

Just remembered. Stay away from western side of Bribie. Camped at Poverty Point once. Mossies and flies nearly carried me away. Ocean side is better.

South of the springs at Agnes Waters the sandflies arent too bad and sandflies knock me around. Give Eurimbela a miss sandflies and midges are rife at all times. I haven't camped there for that reason. Day trips are fine if you stick to the beach in the sun between 09:00 and 16:00 so you need to be sun smart. Some great fishing holes inland of 1770 but definitely don't take your daughter there! Once I went chasing Mangrove Jack and the only way I could stay sane was to smear every exposed bit with mangrove mud! Clothes and hat swamped in RID but no use.

Not much 4wding. One or two tracks to the beach can be challenging but the main track through is easy.

It's a nice spot. With regards to the insects just about everywhere along the coast is the same. Usually ok outside dusk and dawn. When our kids were small we invested in one of those insect tents and would put a few toys in there and put the kids in there when the insects were at their peak. We avoided spraying stuff on their skin. Mozzie coils keep the rest at bay.

Thanks all. I am glad that I had come here and discussed. We have cancelled the idea of Deep Water for the time being. The kid has massive reaction from mosquitoes and sandflies. Is growing out of it slowly. I will spend all the time looking for the mosquitoes... and sand flies if i can find them... so... postponed. Thank you very much for the replies.
