Looking at doing a snow trip this year

Couple of nights in the high country somewhere

Anyone got suggestions on the best areas to head out to?

And what will I need to prepare in advance? Snow chains necessary or will muddies be alright?

Muddies will be fine unless you go into a National park where you have to carry them . We normally go up around Mt Matlock Vic .

Bring a winch and lots of warm clothes including gloves!

As for chains, I've tried snow driving both ways - muddies and snow chains. The difference is night and day - the chains provide amazing, constant grip.

However, most Aussie snow driving isn't deep, and it's quite easy to spin the wheels to find solid ground, so in most cases muddies will get you by.

I tend to go a littler deeper in search for snow, often driving late at night in chase of a storm. Roads ice up more at night, resulting in some pretty slippery conditions. Also in deeper snow compaction can occur, turning the light fluffy stuff into a solid base almost like ice - add an incline and suddenly muddies are like slicks. This winter I'll be running chains on all 4 corners.

Glen I have used chains before and do agree they work really good but it does need to be deep .

Just be careful and check clearances to suspension components when fitting chains to the front tyres.
