G’day all. There have been a few South East Queenslanders asking when we were going to post up some local trips and we have certainly been a bit lax lately. I’m planning to take a mate of mine up with a few swags for a boys trip to show him around the island, do a bit of 4wding, swimming and fishing but mostly to be able to relax around the campfire for a few days and recharge. There’s a few new (and some not so new) south east queenslanders who’ve expressed interest in a local(ish) trip and who are keen to check out the island. I’ve been there dozens of times and there’s not many tracks I haven’t tried yet. It’s one of my favourite places and I’m more than happy to show others around who are interested.
If you are interested in coming along, we’ll be heading up on Ekka day, Wednesday 10th August and coming back the following Sunday (14th August). We’ll camp at Waddy Point beachfront campground http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/fr...-point-map.pdf. There’s no dingo fence around the lower campground but it’s the only one left that has room to accept trailers and I know some people will want them (book early if you do want a trailer site as the ones in the top campground are already taken). Having said that, if you’re new to the island and inexperienced towing on soft sand, I wouldn’t recommend bringing a trailer your first time out if it can be avoided. There will definitely be some very soft sandy sections to get up to the campground.
If anyone is interested in joining us, the more the merrier. You’ll need to book your own vehicle and camping permits on the new national parks website:
https://qpws.usedirect.com/QPWS/
$5.95 per person per night plus $46.65 for a monthly vehicle access permit. There’s also a barge pass to get onto the island which last I checked was $120 return for a car and $60 more for a trailer which you pay on the day.
The itinerary isn’t exactly fixed. We’ll map it out based on the tides and the interests of those coming along but as a minimum I expect to hit the well known attractions like lake mckenzie, eli creek and the maheno, central station, champagne pools, and the sandy cape lighthouse at the very tip. Depending on the enthusiasm of those present, we may also venture out to the western side of the island and/or take some of the lesser used tracks. If you’re interested in coming along even if you don’t want to tag along with us to tour around but just want some good company round the campfire, feel free. When it gets closer I’ll post up some meeting times and meeting points. You don’t need to be super experienced to come along either. I’m happy to help out and teach you whatever I know about sand driving along the way. You also don’t need a super modified rig to come along. On all but the worst of days, a stock prado will handle most of the tracks we’ll take with ease. A lift would help with clearance in a few places but shouldn’t be necessary if you don’t mind a few bumps underneath. You should carry a standard recovery kit and a shovel but certainly don’t need winches and such.
Well, that’s probably too much detail. If you’ve read all that and you’re still keen to come along, post below and we’ll be in touch.
