  • June 2016 Outback Adventure

After 7 years of dreaming and 9 months planning our 26 day outback adventure commenced on June 4 from Redland City (east of Brisbane).
Our plan was to drive to Innamincka via Roma, Charleville and Eromanga. Then to travel along the Strzelecki and Oodnadatta Tracks, take a Lake Eyre flight at William Creek and then continue on to Coober Pedy via the Painted Desert. From there up to Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon and Alice Springs. The girls were flying home from the Alice and the boys were heading home across the Simpson Desert, Birdsville, Windorah, Thargomindah and St George.
The east coast low developing off South East Queensland provided a very wet start to the trip which required us to take a detour to avoid a road closure on the Warrego Highway just west of Ipswich.

By the time we got to Toowoomba the rain was easing and we had driven out of the wet weather at Dalby as we headed west for our first overnight stop at Roma. As is the case in every outback trip the weather was to have a significant effect on our trip. Our group comprised Alan (PP member Bidla) and Julie in a 120 D4D, John and Gayle in a 2014 Pajero diesel and Jim PP member Pradogang)and Chris in a 2004 120 series V6. All vehicles are autos.

We followed the bitumen ever westward overnighting at Charleville where the cloud cleared to enable the Cosmos Centre to be enjoyed. Eromanga (which claims to be the furtherest town from the sea) was our last night in Queensland. This little town has a strong personal connection for our family. In the bar at the hotel there is plaque remembering my grandfather and his two brothers who were prominent in the area in the early years of the 20th century. On my last visit in 2011, my brothers and myself spread our mums ashes and this time I was able to donate some documents and photos to the excellent history museum.

The recent rains had transformed the outback to rich shades of green, it was amazing to see the country in such good condition. Road courtesy is always appreciated!

The Dig Tree is a special place, Cooper Creek was full and as usual the flies were in abundance.

The bitumen continued all the way to the South Australia border, from there the road to Innamincka had been recently graded so we had a good run into our next overnight stop.

We had booked accommodation at the Burke Lodge Cabins and were looking forward to a hot shower after a long day on the road. We were very disappointed to find out our booking had been given to someone else despite having an email confirmation. To make things worse the owners did not have the courtesy to speak to us in person but instead relayed the message through a very embarrassed hotel employee. Many thanks to the hotel staff who were able to find rooms for us in the bunkhouse.

Next day we headed south on the Strzelecki Track towards Lyndhurst and then on to our next overnight stop at Maree. The rain which fell in the previous week had closed this track and we were very relieved to see it was open.

You need to be prepared when travelling. The Strzelecki Track was a good drive. I didn't expect to see a number of bitumen sections that are spread out along its length. Rain threatened for most of the day and we were lucky to only catch a couple of showers.

After a brief stop for lunch at Lyndhurst we headed towards Maree. The road had been recently graded so we arrived in plenty of time to explore this great little outback town.

Next morning we headed out along the Oodnadatta Track towards William Creek. We had a Lake Eyre flight booked, but there was plenty to see along the way.

It was great to see water in Lake Eyre

The mound springs are such a contrast to the harsh surrounding environment.

We arrived at William Creek to find it very busy with travellers who were also doing the Lake Eyre flight. A 25 westerly wind meant a quick flight out but a much slower one back. The pilot told us the Lake was being filled by local rainfall runoff which meant that the surrounding area was covered with lots of green foliage.

The wind was making it very cold so lunch in the pub with the fire going warmed us up before we headed off to Oodnadatta.

This part of the track had not received too much rain so we were able to make good time. The old Ghan railway line is quite close to the track, there are a few old railway sidings to see.
The Algebuckina bridge is amazing. I cannot but be in awe of the workers who built it in such a harsh environment. I can never understand the mentality of people who have to shoot holes in signs.

The Pink Roadhouse was a welcome sight after a long day on the road.

We planned to visit the Painted Desert enroute to Coober Pedy the next day. The road had been closed when we left Maree and we were hoping it was open tomorrow.

Bet it's warmer up there during the day than down here!

Good trip. Are you camping at Coober Pedy or staying in a dugout motel?

              Where next?

After a few hours exploring the Painted Desert we headed towards Coober Pedy via Arckaringa Station. Coober Pedy proved to be an interesting little town and we spent a few days there, it was good to be out of the vehicles for a while.

Alan and Julie stayed in one of the underground motels and found it to be very warm compared to the outside chilly weather.

We did an underground mine tour and came away with an appreciation of the toughness and ingenuity of the opal miners.

We had a look at the Breakaways, another interesting rock formation, just north of town.

Back on the bitumen along the Stuart Highway as we headed towards our next overnight stop at Curtain Springs. We were now amongst the many caravans heading north and south. A variety of vehicles were stopped at the Marla roadhouse, you don't see a tank being transported every day!

I bet Stuart would have loved to have a Prado to travel in. It didn't take too long until we crossed over into the Northern Territory.

We found to going to the sunrise viewing platform for sunset and visa versa it gave a different (and less crowded) perspective of the rock.

The girls flew home from Alice Springs. The weather in Brisbane was forecast to be nasty and we were relieved to hear they arrived safely and were home before the big wet arrived. Chris took a photo of the country we were headed for.

We spent the rest of the day preparing the vehicles for our Simpson Desert crossing. Our plan was to drive down the Stuart Highway to the Kulgera roadhouse and then visit Lambert's Centre, Finke and on to Mt Dare.

An early start to the day which was cold and foggy enabled us to make good time on the bitumen. We aired down at the roadhouse and made our way towards Finke. The road was in good condition but you could see that there had been rain not too long ago. The drive into the Lambert Centre, which is the geographic centre of the mainland continent was slow.

This spot was identified after taking 22 500 high tide reading all around the coast. It sure seemed a long way from the bayside Redlands.
