  • Weekend along the Border Track

Spent a weekend with a few fellas from work along in the Ngarkat Conservation Park, south of Pinnarro near the South Australian and Victorian border, travelling along the Border Track recently. Great fun but the funniest thing was that two fellas who went with us attempted this on Mountain Bikes.

The track is only about 80kms and you could complete in a day but makes for an enjoyable two day trek. We left Adelaide on the Friday night and camped at the norther end of the Conservetation Park. Cost is $5.00 per vehcile per night while in the park. Facilities include a long drop and fire places but you must bring your own wood. Would have been nice to see a bin in there but you can't complain for $5.00.

On the Saturday our intrepid riders set off about and hour before the two cars. They were probably cursing us aftre a few minutes ride since the track is all sandy and not really suitable for riding.

The track is reasonably narrow and sandy so if you don't want the occasional rubbing over the paint work I would recommend to not head that way but you should have a 4wd either. A large section of the track is also one way (North/South) so you shouldn't have any issues with traffic comming the other way altough on the two times I've been through there has been a mass of trail bikes heading through who don't seem to care about life of limb and will travel which ever way they want. Some parts do firm up reasonably well but there had been some rain through the area prior to our trip so the travel wasn't too bad but not solid either

The first day is really just sand with a few hills which can be a lot of fun altough the most challenging hill has been detoured since it was getting fairly cut up. Went there about a month and a half ago and had some fun then. The following link has some shots for an LCOOL trip through there along with some videos of people failing on "Hell Hill"
May 2008 LCOOL SA Border Trip

The riders only made it about the first 28kms. There comments where along the lines of
This is the hardest thing I have ever done
It's like riding along the really really loose sand at the top of the beach all day

They finished their ride at Trig Hill

We stayed over night past the southern end of Nagkart in a camp ground call Redbluff. This is a really nice and well setup camp ground and includes a long drop and fire places. Fairly large area so can cater for big groups

The next day you continue heading south but the sand finishes up and there are some fun bogholes to travel through. Fairly easy going but they where wet and slippery.

Opps, I'm stuck. Better get some real tyres instead of the stock Grandcraps that everyone seems to badmouth

Oh, Steve is stuck as well with real chuncky tyres. I guess I don't feel so bad now

Nothing like a bit of mud

The Border track is a good fun trip, is family friendly and makes for a good weekend away from it all.

Great write up and pics Nick.

Looks like a great weekend was had by all (as long as you weren't on a bike   )

Here in WA we prefer to use P@jeros as depth gauges .... we found mountain bikes really hard to pry out of the guards ... after running them over ... and mountains bikes are a bit quicker, off the mark, than a P@jero

    Cheers

We actually had a few minor incendents along the way. Once the riders through in the towel we chucked their bikes onto a rack on Steves 100 Series. They where then hanging on that for about the next 30knms over resonably bumpy terrain. Just before we hit the turn off to Red Bluff (second on the east past the blue flag) the bike rack gave way and the bikes (one cheapish and the other not so) where then dragged for a bit before we discovered what was happening. Fortunatley no damge but a slight scuff of paint.

The other damage was my head on Sunday morning. No bacon and eggs for me .

.... for years now the government has been importing that cheap Chinese gas to make the bubbles ... and that is what makes us crook the next morning

That was a great read Schaffer! Nice write up.

I smiled when I saw that you chose the path through the bog-hole. I smiled some more when the Prado gets through, yet the 100 with chunky tyres didn't . That was quite unexpected... I guess you never can tell.

Not sure what the hell those cyclists were thinking... sheesh! Glad to hear they came to their senses.

          Cheers,

Probably forgot to mention that I got stuck (a little), spun the wheels (a little), dug a bit of a hole in the mud (a little) and basically made it difficult to get out. What was going through my mind when i was stuck and couldn't get out, not even through the doors was something along the lines of:
              Oh #%$*!

There were quite a few cars through when we went through, the bikes slowed us down. If you are worried about others then why wait for the school holis? We left work at about 5:30pm and got to the site by about 9:00 I think. I can get the GPS route on how to get into it if you like. I think it is in something like GPZ format or something.

So your mate didn't take photos? If there is no evidence, then it didn't happen 8) . I feel better knowing you made it a little more challenging for him though

Thanks for the offer of the GPS info Schaffer, all i have is a Garmin Nuvi which is great around town but not suitable for 4WDing. When we were up at Rawnsely Park last year, i had a group of dads in the car heading out to get some fire wood. I had been showing the bloke in the passenger seat my new toy, not really thinking about where we were going, then said "how the hell do we get out of this place?" So mention GPS around those blokes and all you can hear is "Ha, your GPS cant get you out of Rawnsely Park campground!!"

Really there never was an omission and yeah, I do have photos of it so it did happen, but you learn from your mistakes. In the second picture the guys where laughing at me, and providing lots of advise but just didn't want to get down there and attach the winich cable

Just so you know it gets VERY busy over the long weekends! I did it as a club trip on a June long weekend, and was quite busy. had backlogs at big dunes where people took a few goes to get over etc. great fun though, we had a campertrailer in the group who did pretty well, used a few chicken tracks. The southern section with the bog holes can be a real trap when really wet, but there is a road thats not so obvious heading west you can use to avoid it.

Oh and one more thing, Red Bluff camp ground is maintained, in conjunction with Parks Vic the Horsham 4wd club, they do a great job!
