Binns Tack Reccie. Sunday 03/08/08 ALICE SPRINGS

Hi All,

I know I said I was going to stay in town till the engine was fixed but it is driving me crazy. So I am proposing a reccie run of the Binns Track from N'Dhala Gorge round to Ruby Gap and back through Arltunga. This is a reccie for the GTG as I want to check viability for stock standard Prado's.

Probably have time for refreshments back at Ross River Resort after the run if we get out there early enough.

So any takers for the Alice PPers or PPers visiting from out of town?

Well I guess I am going to have to chance it, I will let the Ross River folks know where we are heading and when we expect to return to the homestead. That way if we break down on the track at least they can send out help.

Sooner or later we all have to meet up this is becoming rediculous with us shift workers always one of us or two not available for the runs.

Okay well we are off to Ross River first up then out to Ruby Gap. Just going to explore some tracks to see which ones are suitable for standard Prados for the GTG. Only us going but we will inform Ross River where we are heading and when we intend to be back at Ross River.

I don't expect any problems but the motor is always in the back of my mind so I will be listening careflly for any hint of problems developing.

Hopefully I will post up some videos on the NT Page on the GTG website tonight.

Well we had a top day out, really enjoyed the trip out to Ruby Gap from Arltunga Historic Reserve. The drive out to Arltunga is pretty mauch like a dirt F3 freeway, I kid you not. Talk about a shock, the last time I went out to Arltunga was back in 1985 and it was a goat track, now it is a friggin freeway. :shock: It is dirt but crikey that is the only difference between it and the F3.

The fun begins when you leave the Arltunga pub and head for Ruby Gap, now the track soon developes into a true track. Had a ball doing this section except for the dimwits who decided it would be a good idea to create speed humps all the way out to Ruby Gap. :roll: I would not mind so much but they are not marked and can be difficult to see due to lack of contrasts, they are not marked and you can easily launch yourself off them as we did a couple of times. :x

Quite a few vehicles out at Ruby Gap with people camping, pretty hot too I think the temp guage reached 35 at one spot.

The rock formations out at Ruby are fantastic with their twisted swirls in the cliff faces.

I will be uploading some video of the track later tonight or tomorrow to give folks who have asked if a standard Prado can do the trip. The answer by the way is I believe a standard Prado will be able to do the trip so long as the proper precautions are used like picking your lines and dropping your tyre pressures etc. I would not have any qualms about driving a stock Prado out there.

Okay I took a couple of photos but only of the Arltunga reserve as we were busy doing video work on the track etc.

Did anyone else notice what the sign near the grave site said?

On Christmas Day 1897 an argument developed at the hotel nearby when one man suggested that another was a horse thief. When the accused man drew his revolver, Onley stepped in to attempt to prevent a shooting. He grabbed at the revolver and was accidentally shot in the head.

Two points to note:
1. Being called a horse thief in the late 1800s was a serious accusation; and
2. If you try to grab a loaded revolver, make sure you grab the right end and don't point the gun at your head! :shock:
