  • Yota's Birdsville Races Trip (lots of photos)

Well I've finaly pulled my finger out and uploaded some photos of our trip.

Met up with my parents in Dubbo before heaading as far as Cobar for our first night, rained all the way from Maitland to Nyngan.
Next day we push on to White Cliffs, via a section of the Darling river track and Wilcannia.

Visited an underground B&B / mine tour

And finished the night with a cold beer

Then we were off to cameron Corner via Milparinka & Tibooburra
We were greeted in Milparinka buy one very friendly donky

    Cameron Corner

From the corner we headed towards Innaminka via the Old Strzelecki Track

we pushed on from Innaminka and stayed the night at The Dig Tree

The next day we left the Dig Tree for Birdsville, via Cordillo Downs and a night at Cadelga ruins

    Cordillo Downs

    Cadelga

    Birdsville

The day after the races we went out for a play on Big Red, we crossed it the hard way, west to east, but I did take a couple goes at it as I was too lasy to let the tyres down any further. In the end had to go down to 18psi anyway. Came across a group that had just crossed the simpson, with a pajero with a busted transfer case, did most of the Simpdson in 2wd. He had blocked one of the tracks over Big Red, so Dad tried to pull him over but in the end needed both prados to get it over the crest.

Same more photos of the pub on our way out of town, The whole race weekend was fantastic, and very well organised, found the cleaning contractors with their company caravan and a road train full of porta loos

After Birdsville our aim was a few days in the Flinders Ranges so we headed off down the inside track and Birdsville track with a night at Mungerannie

The next day we headed for Maree, than out to lake eyre and overnight at Muloorina Station, for a $2 donation to the RFDS it was one of the best camp spots we had on the whole trip.

From lake eyre we aimed for the Flinders, via Lyndhurst & Mt Fitton. We drove about 80Km of the Strzelecki track, anyone wishing to drive the Strzelecki track should do so very soon, signs indicated a 2.5 year project to tar the track, sections we drove were either very well graded, fast dirt or already tared.

    Farina ruins

    Strzelecki track

We can highly recomend the Mt Fitton track for anyone doing the northen end of teh flinders, very scenic, not 4wd but definently high clearence needed in spots.

Once in the Fliders we camped a few nights at Arkaroola resort and drove a couple of the marked 4wd track, again highly recomended. We only drove the free tracks but they also had a $40 track that was suposed to be well worth it but we chose to wait till skytreck to pay for a track.

Between Arkaroola and Blinman, we got our only breakdown of the trip, a tyre on dads camper trailer.

Our last stop was Willow Springs Station and a trip around Skytreck, an outstanding days drive, the 1st half of the track is very easy and VERY scenic, the 2nd half of the track is pretty easy with alot of low range mainly due to the rough track. Some of the hills could have been driven in high range but were pretty choped up by inexperianced people driving the track with high tyre pressures.

From Willow springs it was a 2 day drive home again with an overnighter at Broken Hill.

Overall we had a great time, only damage I have found to the car is one lost screw from the winch control box.
I was really impressed with the Mick Thompson MTZ's even though the 2 rear tyres got pretty chopped up on the gibber section of the Birdsville track. I think any tyre carying the load we had over that section of gibber would of had some damage, I had them down to 26psi but probably could have gone lower, still they handeled great and not one puncher.

Averaged about 14.5L/100km for the trip wich I am pretty happy with considering the load and the roof rack, Dad's petrol averaged about 20L/100km with the camper on.
Most expensive deisel was 206.8c/L at Innaminka

Hmmm it's like your following me around....

2 rear tyres got pretty chopped up on the gibber section of the Birdsville track
Chopping up of the rears is pretty normal on the gibbers no matter what brand of tyres (I had the same thing, inc on 100 series Cruiser with stockers on)

I think it's just the weight over the rear end when loaded.
