  • WA - Balingup Weekend - Completed

    Hi all,

Just found out I have at least one full weekend free before Christmas, 29-30th November.
I was thinking of heading down to the Balingup/Nannup/Greenbushes region and have a wander
around the hills looking for interesting tracks, etc. It's been a few years since I've had a look around
    the area.

It's a mix of Australian bush / state forest, and pine plantations. Some fairly large hills, and of
    course the Blackwood river.

I'll probably drive down Friday afternoon, or very early Saturday morning, and back on the
Sunday afternoon. Camping is likely to be bush camping style (ie: bring your own everything).

I know it's fairly short notice, but if anyone is free and interested in coming along you'd be more
    than welcome. Post up here.

    Gday John,

I just came back from that area today and i must say the weather was perfect
    .
We went to the Yeagerup dunes and they and the tracks were in good condition, however if your planing on going take some preventitives for March Flies, Midgies and possible Sand Flies as they were in abundance.

Unfortunatly i wont be able to make it as ive got a bit to much on but have a great time.

Ahh jeez, it would only be a hop, skip for me to join you, but I will be in Perth that weekend catching up with Bro in Law who will be on a flying trip from OS.

Yes, flys are about, and the wet weather has been kind to Mozzies down here, so be prepared
I dont know much about upstream from Nannup, except plenty of hills, but down stream know it quite well

      Next time.

I got used to lots of mozzies and flies in the Top End and North Queensland earlier this year. I'll just
have to double check the nets and drums of deet are still in the back.

            Nice weekend,

As you'd probably know we'd been having a bit of unseasonal rain lately here.
It was reasonably fine over the weekend, just a few showers came through.

Many of the tracks down that way are through pine plantations and were
very loose and slippery. The hills tend to also be on the 'large' side. I
had to winch up one. (Steep hill and no traction - twin difflocks in, BFG
muds down to 10psi and still all 4 wheels spinning in the loose stuff).

Unfortunately no pics though. I took the camera bag, but made the fatal
mistake of not checking to make sure the camera was actually in the camera
bag. Yes I know, stupid mistake.

There are some nice camping spots further south (out of Nannup on the Blackwood
river), and spent one night on the top of a hill off the Balingup Nannup Rd. Great
view from the rooftop tent in the morning over the mist filled Blackwwod River
            valley.

The area would be great for a PradoPointWA weekender over the summer. (as the
tracks will be dry and only ruts and other such fun things to enjoy). Plus the Jalbaragup
river crossing is actually low enough to drive through.
