Re: Night run through Owen Springs Reserve

Sounds like you guys had one of those nights. If I had notified my avaliability this week I would have been one of the Northern Territory Emergency Services guys there in the morning. I ended up hearing through Fergs later in the day. Sounds like another Outback 4wd Club disaster. Sounds even worse than Boggey Hole and the big fire they started, they havnt had a good run this club. Even the President JB didnt know about this run, I expect it wont be covered by club insurance. Im glad I stayed home and worked on my rear bar.

      Far out Mav.

My first reaction was FFAAAARRRRRKKKKKK !!!

How easy is it for the simplest things to go pear shaped.

Really pleased to hear that everyone got back safely ... but it sounds like there were moments when even that was in doubt.

Can I just say that .... when we are all over in Alice next year ..... that if you pull out some some weather data and suggest that it might rain ....

      ..... I"M LISTENING TO YOU !!

      Cheers

Wow. That must have been one hell of a trip, good to hear that everyone got out of it OK. I'm sure that one lost troopy would have to considered a small price to pay in return for everyone's safety considering the conditions.

I'm guessing that the 4WD group mentioned in this story is your party:

Yep that story gets more distorted each time it gets reported. The original mistake was made by the ABC who left off the name of the road which is Larapinta Drive, it has done the rounds and now it is being reported as the town of Drive.

Not sure how much more confirmation they need considering the photos of the Troopy in the river, I purposely did not post up some photos but I will make the album available to view later tonight for those that are interested.

Wow Mav, What a ripper storm you guys get in the middle. Good to here you stuck together and survived.

            More campfire storys.

Now I bet there is a bit of Mud around to play in  Mud tires in Alice, that would be a site.

So do we include wet suits and canoes in our packing list for the GTG .

            Keep dry

Mud Tyres would have been very welcomed on my rig that night I can tell you, Russ.

As promised here is the link to the album containing many of the photos from that night. Some are very blurred due to many things the least of which is the fact that I was shivering so badly from the cold.

Mav, has the river dropped enough to recover the Troopy? Are they going to bother??

I believ they are going to recover it but it is a write off, he may be able to get the new suspension kit he had put on the other week. It is going to take some doing to get it out of the river even though it has now receded significantly. If they don't do it by Tuesday afternoon I think it will stay in the river for a while cause we are expecting another deluge the same as Saturday night.

Wow, my heart-rate and anxiety levels climbed just reading your story .

 That initial weather forecast was certainly telling. It would be interesting to know how the weather discussion went. It leaves me wondering if the decision making on the night was done by 'group-thinking'. It is so easy to get caught up in the moment and dismiss evidence contrary to the groups momentum.

Fergs, what is a 4WD appliance? Got some pics?

Re: Night run through Owen Springs Reserve

Just remembered one pretty funny experience that occured at about 8:30 on Sunday morning. An aboriginal family pulled up in a beaten up old commodore, they had come from Wallace Rockhole I think but they could have come from anywhere really. They stopped behind our convoy and came and had a chat with us before heading down to check out the creek crossing. They came back and spoke some more with us and one of them was a real funny bugger. He knew the area of course and he says to us " You wanna folla me? I take this track here hey. It goes way round the back hey and hooks up with Standley Chasm road hey!". We just stared at him in disbelief and then looked at the Commodore sitting on its axels. . He looked at us and with a bit of a laugh he says" I only got a little car, I make it. You got big car so you would make it too." We decline the offer to follow him as some of us had already been for a walk up the tack and saw it was already under water. Anyway as he leaves to get in his car he says " Hey you might see me hey, I might be float'n past in me car hey, you see me I be smil'n and wavin as we go by."

Well they took off and we could hear the Commodore for ages going up and down in revs etc, then about an hour later we crossed the river and Standley Chasm road is about 500 meters up the road. Well just as we approached it out comes this beaten up Commodore and they continue on down the road in front of us till they reached Roe Creek then they were stuck as Roe Creek was really flowing. We were able to get across but a normal sedan had no hope.

Weather radar for Alice Springs shows another heavy rain front approaching again... coincidentally currently sitting directly over Owen Springs.
