  • LOCKHART RIVER / CAPE YORK

Thinking about a trip up to Lockhart River area which is on the Eastern side of Cape York to go and visit one (several) top fishing spots that I know, do a bit of hunting and of course explore with the rig. The dates are a ball park figure of sometime in either August, September, October, November. Now, I'm intending on going down to old site (which is the where the locals were resettled for a short time during ww2) and some other spots south of there which have beach lagoons etc but as it is aboriginal land, I require permission to camp and visit the area.

In about 3 weeks, I'm heading back up to Lockhart (to go fishing and diving) and am intending on having a chat to the mayor to get said permission, however obviously the mayor is going to want to know how many vehicles / persons will be coming along.

Anyone who is interested in coming along is more than welcome, just reply to this thread so I have some idea. I don't need to know definate numbers, just enough to be able to give some idea to the mayor. Be aware though that if we are given permission, the mayor may wish to put a cap on how many of us may visit and camp in the area.

You have to be self sufficient and track is not good for camper trailers. In fact, I wouldn't do it. There is a general store and fuel bowser in Lockhart township itself, but where we'll be it's a looong way from civilisation. It is awesome country though and has heaps of history, aboriginal and war (old american bomber bases).

PS - I plan on hitting the frenchmans track as well.

As for how long, it really depends on what the group wants to do. 5 - 7 days is probably a safe bet.

Re: LOCKHART RIVER / CAPE YORK

I have spent a bit of time there over the years and it is a great place. Most of my trips were by sea, so it would be good to see it from the land.
My understanding of the track is that it is pretty rugged and often unpassable most of the time, but in the dry you should be right. Should be fun anyway.
Time off for me is an impossible mission this year, so unfortunately I wont be there but must say it would be one of my to do things.
Dont forget it is alcohol free too guys.

Lucky Buggar, It's a great spot, takes about four hours to do the 130kms in from the Weipa Rd from memory, great redclawing at the Wenlock crossing. I have some books on the old airfield if you want any info on that before you go. Though your local contacts should probably help you out there too. Windy at Chile Beach most of the time, but there are also campsites inthe rainforest near where the road splits to go to Portland Roads. Proably not where your intending to go though by the sounds of it.

Hey Snowy, we might go up to portland for a quick look see, and if I can borrow a boat, I'll probably try and take the gang out to the reefs there, however it could get a bit windy at that time of year and generally unpleasant.

Chile beach doesn't do much for me I'm afraid.

I know the camp spots you're talking about but really not where I'm intending on going. We go South from Lockhart and as Plucker pointed out, the track is pretty rugged so it should be good fun.

Re: LOCKHART RIVER / CAPE YORK

I’m coming over to FNQ sometime in October this year. We are planning to leave Perth in September with a van and heading to Cairns via Canberra etc. The wife and I have 3 months in total. I was planning to dump the van somewhere in Cairns or Cooktown and take a couple of weeks ‘doing’ the Cape before heading back along the eastern seaboard.

I was hoping to catch up with some PradoPointers in Cairns – it seems you are fairly active there! The CREB track sounds great (I have been watching the threads) but this trip to Lockhart sounds even better.

I must admit however that it might be a bit difficult to coordinate things with you. I don’t really want a deadline hanging over me from day one of the trip – the idea is to take as long as it takes. I probably won’t know until two or so weeks before arriving in town if I can get there by a particular date. So don't orgainise with me in mind - I would hate to not be able to front up!

I’ll keep my eye on this tread – and perhaps I can get there just at the right time…. I would not contemplate this sort of trip without other people to accompany me – and locals would be great!

Nice one James, that's way out of the way down there, about 35kms (without bends) from Lockhart. Should be absolutley no pesky mobile phone reception down there  . It's been ten years since I have been there, we did a Cape trip hunting WW2 plane wrecks. We were farily successful too, we dug up a Kittyhawk up past Cape Flattery on the beach.

We plan to head south on this years holidays, so I don't think we would sqeeze a Cape jaunt in, but it's tempting.

                        Thanks joey!

It would be great to catch with a couple of locals to see some of the things we don't have in WA - rainforest! Some of your close by spots look spectacular...

Hopefully in the next few weeks we are sorting out some approximate timing (plus or minus a couple of weeks) because we figure we want to get to the Cape as early as we reasonably can to limit the chance of wet/hot weather. Then take it a bit more leisurely on the way back.

I’m hoping to get a bit of fishing in at Weipa – perhaps on a day charter as I am a keen (and fairly experienced) saltwater fly fisherman.

                        I’ll keep in touch…
