    We just went through the Ranges this last weekend.
    On the bike on a 1000k ride with some other farRiders.
    Top spot. and as you say, they really do just shoot straight up from very flat plains.

    We saw the turn off to Bluff Knoll. Thats to the west of Chester pass road yeah?, and by the pics it looks like you climbed a peak to the east...
    I would go down there again for a longer look with the Camper for sure..

    This was in the afternoon, when we rode through the middle earlier it was cloud covered..

      Ok yeah that looks like Bluff Knoll you've got in the background there. Check out Google Maps and you'll see that Bluff Knoll is actually to the East of Chester Pass Road. Mt Toolbrunup, that we climbed, is actually to the West of Chester Pass Road, and is prettey much at the middle of Chester Pass. if you come in from the Western side through Cranbrook, Mt Toolbrunup actually appears very pointed and jagged. From the Chester pass road though it looks a little more forgiving. It's quite interesting how the mountains seem to "change" depending on the direction you're looking at them from.

      Definitely a good weekender. I'd definitely go back there when there's some good cloud action happening. Apparently the clouds can be very spectacular at times. Photographers would have a ball I'd reckon.

        We also did a Stirling ranges trip on the Australia day W/E, but stayed in Motel at Albany (Don't have my Praedo yet - due end April)

        Not sure about Bluff Knoll being so easy a climb. I think I am reasonably fit (Gym a couple of times a week) but found the constant climbing a real effort and did not make it to the top. Old age does not have much to recomend it.

        Really enjoyed the views around the Stirlings.

        We did pay the entrance fee, and most cars at the Bluff Knoll car park seemed to have ticket displayed.
        Dune colour GLX with Option pack, Bull bar, Tow bar, Cargo barrier.

          Actually its interesting what reactions people seem to have when faced with an honor ticket system. I have a mate who steadfastly refuses to pay entry fees when entering national parks. Says that he pays enough tax and that should cover any running costs national parks may have. Why should he cover any Government funding shortfalls? Just his point of view.

          I certainly would pay the fee but only if I was going to get a good couple of hours out of it. If I was just going up there to soak up some mountain air in the carpark for 10 minutes then I wouldn't be so inclined to pay. It also seems too easy to just grab a pass and stick it to your window and throw the money envelope away. I suppose if the ranger came and noted down all the rego numbers you'd be in for it though. But as we sat there reading the info at the pay station at least one car went straight past.

          Bgreeni you can make it a challenge for yourself. Take it nice and slow with plenty of rest stops. Maybe wait for the weather to cool a bit too. I reckon you'd get it. I know what you mean though, the constant climbing fairly takes it out of you. Kudos for giving it a shot though. No one can call us couch potatoes at least!

          As it happens we met a guy from Albany near the top of Mt Toolbrunup who said it really didn't take that long to get to the Stirling Ranges from Albany. Maybe a 1/2 hour? Would that be right? Theorectically, you could book a spa bungalow in Albany for unwinding at night, then gung-ho it in the mountains during the day. Might give that idea some thought......
