I am on pager duty this weekend Sean so we will not be able to go, I have to stay inside pager coverage which restricts me to staying in town.

Zook, are you doing this with John from Hermannsburg? I only ask as he announced at the last 4wd meeting that he was taking a couple of people with him through this area and further on but he had received approval from the traditional owners to allow him to go there as it is mostly all aboriginal land now and has been closed off to the general public. We were going to go with John as he made it an open invite to attend, his party are doing this on the 7th and 8th of Mar but I got stuck with pager duty so that put an end to that trip.

Re: TRIP REPORT Alice Springs Day Trip Ellery Big Hole 8/3/09

The day started with great sunshine and a clear sky. With a low 32'c it was the perfect time to get out of town.
Our meeting point is always at Fynns Grave when we drive down to the West Macs via Larapinta Dr.
As usual Mark (Happy Trails) was on time and a bit of a chat about 2way channels we where on our way.

We found the turn off and aired down.

We had to stop for the kids a few times and also shake the thrid leg.

There were no signs that we were passing through Aboriginal land what so ever then we reached the NP gate. We left it as we found it, closed.

The track was'nt too bad, a few big rutts to tackle and the odd creek bed until we got to the creek bed proper.

When we finally reached the end of the rack to our surprise we wernt alone. The 2 other vehicles were indeed workmates.

We had a bit of a chin wag and then headed down to the waterhole for a swim.

It was only a short walk over rocks to get to the waterhole and worth taking the long way as we didnt have a crowd like the other side.

Where we stopped had plenty of shade and a great place to camp overnight or even a few.

After our swim we said goodbye and hit the track back home, just before we hit the black top we aired up.

A good day all up, not many flies and no crowds. You cant beat that,

        Zook.

Looks like you had a top day out Zook, we were confined to Alice due to work requirements so Had to make do with a visit to the reptile centre to give the kids a bit of a thrill.

I think the aboriginal lands are those west of Ellery which is were Johns expidition was heading.
