  • Australia trip

Well, after months and months of planning it is now only five days till we leave on our nine week trip to the central and western parts of Australia. Having lived the best part of our life in Western Australia, it was always my dream to travel to the Kimberleys. Now that we live in Tassie, we are doing it from here. Not that we mind, as we get to see more of this great country of ours.

Whole trip has been planned out on Oziexplorer - Catch the Thursday ferry to Melbourne, Murray River region, Broken Hill, Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta Track, Lake Eyre, Uluru, Alice Springs, Darwin, Gibb River Road, Broome, Coral Bay, Perth, Esperance and back across the Nullabor to home. 17,000 kilometres approx.

Having lived in the West and having travelled around the South West alot, the Perth part is mainly to see family and friends.

Have spent a bit on our 05 Prado GXL V6 of late:

    Billstein/Ridepro suspenion upgrade
    Dual battery system
    12V outlets to the rear
    GME UHF radio
    Bridgestone 649's

We will be travelling with our Challenge Offroad Camper Trailer, but I have booked holiday accommodation in some places like Darwin to give us all a break from camping.

We will attempt to do weekly reports.

Really staring to get a little nervous as well as excited.

+1 with the goodlucks and envy.

        Sounds like an awesome trip.

Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

What dates do you expect to be in the Flinders, along the Oodnadatta Track, in Alice Springs and Darwin?

We just got a Challenge Meridian off road camper and love it. Our first major trip is in June/July to do the Oodnadatta Track and the Flinders Ranges before joining the PP GTG in the Red Centre. Maybe we might cross paths along the way???

Mate, it sounds like a fantastic trip. We did the Gibb River Beef road in 2003 and had the best family trip. I am sure you will have a fantastic time.

That looks like an awesome trip you have planned their John. I can't wait to read up on where you've been. I will assume you actually have the 694 Duellers and not some new prototype that Bridgies are working on. Did a four week trip around WA many years ago and we ended up balancing camping and On Site Vans in Caravan parks. Some days you just can't face setting up camp, but some days there is no option.

With your planning on Ozi, is there any chance you can post a pic of Australia with your proposed route? Would be interesting to see this, if you have time and don't have a concern with posting that.

Good luck on the trip and have a great time.

                Hey John V, looks awesome.

Hope you have your Pradopoint sticker on display. Looks like you are coming thru Busselton area, so will keep an eye out for you.
I would say the new Mandurah bypass, Kwinana Freeway extensions will be open by then as well if looking to avoid that little bottle neck that occurs on on weekends.

                Safe travelling

                    Re: Australia trip

Epic trip, there's no doubt. I'll do something similar one day, might even include Tassie as we loved it there when we went for a brief visit 2 years ago. You'll see a whole lotta OZ and that can only be a good thing. Are you leaving QLD for next time? Are you going to stop by at Shark Bay and swim with the dolphins? Looks like you included Kalbarri, nothing like a sunset cruise up the Murchison!

John, good luck with your trip... very envious here!

Is that a OziE Aussie map? Been looking for a suitable map to plot our 1/2 lap but haven't found one suitable scale or got a suitable sized one on paper I could scan. That looks just right!

                      Cheers, Nige

                        Johnv,

Did you consider returning from Darwin via Jabiru and doing the Arnhem/Kakadu Highway route instead of retracing your steps along the Stuart Highway back to Katherine? You could then see Jabiru, a few of the big estuarine rivers (Adelaide River and South Alligator River), perhaps visit Yellow Waters and Nourlangie Rock, plus just see some different scenery.

There's not much of an overall traveling distance (perhaps 200km more all up).

                        David.

                          Re: Australia trip

I'll jump in and suggest adding a leg out to Lake Eyre. Halligan Bay.

Turnoff from Oodnadatta track 7kms short of William Creek. About 70kms. It's not a bad track and the worst corrugations have bypass tracks. You will see water. Basic facilities (toilets) at Halligan Bay but it's worth a look, could be a once-in-a-lifetime visit (not that your whole trip isn't)

Also worth suggesting the scenic flights at William Creek, but $$$ involved there.

                            Michael,

Have already booked a flight with Wrights Air in William Creek over Lake Eyre. I missed it last night but the wife saw the story on Lake Eyre on the 7.30 report to really wet her appetite. Should be a once in a lifetime experience.

                              my thoughts exactly.

in terms of timeframes- I have no idea, so is 9 weeks a leisurely, just right or rushed pace to do this or similar routes?

looking forward to the pics and weekly updates.
