  • TRIP REPORT:Steep Point, Western most point of the Mainland.

Just thought i would share my plans for next Monday, 25th May to Thursday 29th May.

I have decided to put to good use a weeks holiday coinciding with my Father inlaws visit to try out all my new gear in a shake down run to Steep Point.

For anyone who doesn't know, Steep Point is in the Shark Bay heritage area about 900K's north of Perth, And the Western most point of the Mainland and about 1000K's from us.

Will dabble in a bit of fishing while we are there, 3 nights of sipping latte's around a warm fire... (Latte's = Jim beam), and also try out the new set up of fridge, Freezer, batteries, roof rack and check the fuel consumption figures in readiness for the GTG.

Oh, and the last 130 odd K's is dirt, with about 40K sand 4X4ing.
    Cant wait.

Will post up some pics on our return.

    Jeff.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

We were there only 3 weeks ago.

    Cliffs near Blow Holes

    Says it all

We only went for a day trip from Nanga which was pretty full on a few days of camping and fishing would of been great..

      Awesome.

I have to ask, How was the track in?
Forecast for Perth on the weekend is rain, dont know if it will stretch up the coast that far, but a little bit of rain should harden the track up a bit from what I have heard as I havnt been there before.

A mate got back about 6 weeks ago. Towed a 4m dinghy in with his Cruiser no worries, so you should be fine.

BTW, they cleaned up with the fishing, so good luck. It is however a bit Windy in Shark Bay area at the moment, but hopefully its offshore for you

        Also some other reports

Jeff the road to Useless was very good 90kph after that it was very corrugated and sandy in places and you must reduce your tyre pressures to 20psi.
Speaking to the caretaker/ranger he said while it was so dry he would not be smoothing out the roads.
This smoothing is done by towing a lump of iron behind his Nissan Patrol no graders here.

Have a great time looks like and excellent place to relax for a few days.

Re: Steep Point, Western most point of the Mainland.

              Well the trip was awesome.

We left early monday morning and after 14hours we were up at the point.

With the camper trailer, roofrack, wood etc we had fuel economy of 18lts per 100, so not that flash, but at least we know how its going for the GTG.
We must have muked around too much on the way there as it only took 12 hours to get home.

The main road in is pretty good. and getting graded as we speak. so will only be beter for the next few months at least.

The track proper was good to drive, some tough hills but forward progress was never halted. 18PSI and power got us up and over the worst of it with ease.
Corrugations were bad in places tho.

Early tuesday morning looking east at the point.

These guys were balloning and caught a few makrel when we where there. Here they are gaffing the following fish.

              shower time...

Rough place, next time might go up with a dinghy.

              Jeff.

Great pics jeff. We loved Shark Bay but haven't been to Steep Point yet. Gotta fix that.....

Ditto about the boat, Have already looked at some cartoppers.

But i was also rethinking my fuel usage, I forgot the 4 jerries we put in it at the point. So our fuel up there was about 22-24L per 100. Thats heavy...
