  • Pilbara

Just got back from four weeks up in the Pilbara region of WA.

    Our general trip was;
Perth - Wiluna - CSR - Durba Springs - Georgia Bore - Rudall River - Desert Queen Baths -
    Skull Springs - Running Waters - Carawine Gorge - Marble Bar - Newman - Gregory's -
Cleaverville - Karatha - Old Onslow - Kennedy Ranges - Steep Point - Perth

I won't bore you with lots of typing, just a few highlights.

The CSR - We only did the southern section, but its a great experience, and will definitely be back
to do the full run sometime.

Running Waters and Carawine Gorge - Simply lovelly spots that require a 'rest day' to enjoy the
    location at each.

Mt Meharry - A nice drive to the top of the highest point in WA. 30+ minutes of low range second
gear, loose shale type rocks, a few step ups, fun drive.

Gergory's - A great location near Millstream, but without the tourists. Skip the weekends though as
it's popular with the locals for a weekend camping.

Kennedy Ranges - The well know east side of the ranges is nice, but take the track up and over the
top of the ranges, and down the eastern side for a totally different (and I think better) experience.

Steep Point - Great beaches, beaut swimming, and fantastic fishing.

Anyhow, that enough typing, here are a few pics.

Theres a thread on my 79 in the 'My Build Up' forum section. It has most of the details.

You didnt get to Skull Springs road via Upper Carawine did you? I'm 5 weeks out from heading up there and am hoping to pull the trailer from Upper Carawine to the Skull Springs Road but its difficult finding out what condition the road is in.

Looks like a great trip there John. I just love the colours of the Australian outback. The awesome contrasts between the red and the bluey green. Fantastic.

The local Opposite Lock (Adelaide) has pictures of that 120 series (I think) during the actual fire. On their counter there are about 6 images of the fire getting worse and worse. Shame to see such a fine local machine destoryed. Not fazed about that Poojero though. Just hope no one was hurt.

Sorry, we didn't go into the Upper Carawine. We did plan to take a day trip/drive, but got lazy relaxing at the regular (lower) Carawine.

Interestingly both were v6 petrol models. Apparently, petrol exhausts get hotter than diesel and that can more easily ignite the spinifex grass. It's often the bash plates underneath that act like blades and cut the spinifex grass stalks off as you drive over them, traping the grass under the vehicle. We stopped and cleared out the underneath of the vehicles every so often on our run. Not too much trapped (but best to be carefull).

Like many I saw the pics of the prado burning on the net not long after it occurred. From memory it was the spinifex resin - when the spinifex burns it creates a sticky resin so I've been told. It's this resin which is very difficult to put out with an extinguisher, it needs lots of water.

Well I had to be sure everything was good for the GTG, so a short run up north was just the trick.
Will see you soon on our run east to the GTG, if not before hand.
