  • Sydney - Cape York - Top End - Red Centre - Sydney

    G'day Everyone

After months of planning, we are about to set off on a 3 month adventure. The wife and I are both taking long service leave and our two boys (ages 10 & 8 ) are taking a term off school to experience more of Australia than they would ever get at a school excursion.

After leaving Sydney and heading straight towards sunny Qld, we will then spend about a week making our way up the Qld coast to Cairns. After a few days checking our Cairns, we head off up the Cape for the next 3 weeks. Coming back down the Cape, we will make our way via Normanton to Lawn Hill NP for 3 nights. It is then off to Darwin for 3-4 days before checking out Kakadu and then heading up the Central Arnhem Road to Nhulunbuy for a week or so up in the Gove Peninsula.

We will then make our way back to Katherine before going over to Gregory NP for 3-4 days. After this we head south to Alice. Our 3 weeks in the Red Centre will take in Alice Springs - East Macdonnell Ranges up to Gemtree - West Macdonnell Ranges to Glen Helen Resort - follow the Mereenie Loop Rd to Kings Creek Station and then down to Uluru / Olgas.

The return leg will take in Oodnadatta, Coober Pedy, Broken Hill and outback NSW back to Sydney.

    13 weeks in total!

The trip planning has been great fun and has been a great excuse to buy lots of new toys for both me and the Prado!

    Cheers - Byrnsie

OH wow sounds like an awesome trip. Now is the best time to go to the Tip too! We are going up there for 2 weeks in August, 2 weeks isn't nearly enough time, but we don't have long service leave yet! Make sure you post up pics of the trip!

        Have fun

Sounds like a fantastic trip Byrnsie. Hope you enjoy your time in the Top End and also the Red Centre. In fact, I'm sure you'll love it.

You're kids will have a great time and learn so much. Our three children just had the best adventure and time after 4 weeks traveling around the Red Centre, Outback SA and the Flinders Ranges.

Can't wait to read your report on Gregory National Park. This is one area that I still want to visit more thoroughly - perhaps on our next trip over to the Kimberleys.

I'll keep an eye out for you when you're in Darwin. 8)

Hey Buyrnsie, Make sure you visit litchfield national park while your in Darwin, I reckon its better than Kakadu, but that was 20 years ago befor the tourists found it, sounds like a great trip, nice to have plenty of time to explore & take things easy, a bit different to my mad rush from Brisbane, across the Simpson, Up to the Alice then back to Coober Pedy & home via the Strzelecki Track in 3 weeks
