  • TRIP REPORT : Deep Creek Conservation Park, SA

Just before Christmas, we brought our Singaporean relatives where no Singaporean tourist has ever been before. Our final destination was Narnu Farm on Hindmarsh Island, but enroute, we stopped by Deep Creek Conservation Park for a bit of sightseeing. It was as much an adventure for them as well as for me as I have never been there before and did not know what to expect.

Here we are at the park info bay where you self register your vehicle and pay the park fees. I let down my tyres here as I didn't know what to expect. With 8 passengers on board, the luggage had to go on the roof.

    Park info board

We then came to a section where the road had big rocks to stop 2WD going past this point

This was then followed by a steep descent. I engaged low range and crawled down in 1st gear. We were then greeted with magnificent views.

    We met the locals

    And then more views

We reached the carpark at Blowhole Beach and took in more of the views

There was a long walk down to the beach

This was the only shelter we could find to have a picnic on a 40degC day

The beach was nice and clean

The kids had a heap of fun

And finally a shot from the beach into the park before the long climb back to the car and onto our next destination

When we got out of the park, I took out my air compressor to air up but the fuse blew after 1.5 tyres. The nearest petrol station did not have an air pump so we had to drive all the way to Encounter Bay to air up. I now have a few spare fuses courtesy of ARB Regency park.

There are camping areas down there and the whole place seems to be good for hiking/long walks. We only ventured straight down to Blowhole Beach as we didn't have time to explore the rest of the park.

We visited the place a 2nd time to bring another visitor there. This time, the Prado was set up to take video.
Here is the track down to Blowhole Beach. There is a steepish descent shortly after the obstacle which says 4WD ONLY. Where we paused in the middle was where we met some of the natives (wallabies).

          Great footage Andrew
The camera seems quite steady mounted on the vehicle, please can you describe your mounting and type of camera.
          Cheers Troy

Re: TRIP REPORT : Deep Creek Conservation Park, SA

I have a Manfrotto 486 compact ball head and and M8 channel nut and mounted it to my roof platform. The interface between the M8 channel nut and the tripod head is a custom M8 to 3/8" UNC adaptor. This was made from a 3/8" UNC bolt, with the hex head cut off and then a short section turned down and tapped to an M8 thread. This was then screwed to the M8 channel nut with loctite and then sprayed with cold galv. Here are some pics:

            The items unassembled.

            Loosely assembled

Mounted on the roof platform which are 2m long Rhino HD bars

Someone left us a pink fishing rod which I have mounted to the crossbars. I will be using is as a makeshift sandflag at Robe this ANZAC w/end.

I also bought a Gorillapod from Aldi's that is for DSLRs. Cost about $30. Mounted it to the front grill and cable tied the legs together behind the grill.

This was a test video of what the video footage was like taken from the front grill
            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xouhd_K5IdA

The camera used was the Panasonic LX3. I will probably use my old Sony DV tape videocam next time as I think the vibrations won't be so good for the LX3. However, I won't be getting 720p HD quality on my Sony. But I'd rather not break my LX3.

Great setup amts. I have an old camera I'm willing to mount the same way you did. I especially enjoy the effect of time-lapse so will be playing with that in the future.

Also saw your pics of Deep Creek for the first time just now. Beautiful looking spot. I reckon the photo with the kids jumping by the waters edge is saleable. Captured a nice moment there.

On all my offroad trips, no one has really got out of the car to take some footage except for the one time at Saunders Gorge. Will see how I go at Robe. Apparently it's going to be cold and I'd rather not hang my camera out there in the salty environment.

I took another look at the fishing rod and it has the words Femme Fatale written on it. So watch out, if you get too attracted to my Prado, you need to look away from the pink rod.
