As the kids get older, we'll be exploring that neck of the woods, as my brother-in-law has a massive block of land near the Rocky River, bordering the Timbarra NP (SW of Tabulam).
I looked that up in google maps. Looks to be sandwiched between a couple of state forests and an excellent area to explore by 4WD. Keep that BIL close . Now if you want to explore the area before your kids are ready for it, you know how to contact me .

      Hi Matt and Stewy

In the past we have spent heaps of time in that area and there is some great driving. On your detour on the way back through the Toonumbar forest did you find the olf fire tower, it's a great view.

Your track looks like one I lead 5 cars through one day, with very little in the way of signage I had to resort to the forestry map and and the GPS co-ordiantes off my UHF, we spent about two hours in there, found four bike riders who followed us because they were lost as well, eventually came out at Unumgar where you did.

There are a couple of really nice camping spots in there, Iron Pot Ck and Paecock Ck and you can drive through there to come out at Kyogle. Can't wait for the trip down to the GTG.

      Regards, Richo.

Re: TRIP REPORT 12-14 Jun Richmond Range, Clarence River, Levuka

        Howdy Folks,….

Here’s a few more pics from the last long weekend.

After leaving the Mt Lindsay Hwy, we took the more scenic route South.

Seeing we were now in the country, we stopped here for a bit and collected some free milk.

We were now up in the hills, then we descended into some light rainforest.
As you can see, the temp was 7degrees at 10:09am.
At this stage I was hoping that the low temps weren’t a sign of things to come.

We stopped here briefly at the lookout to Mt Lindsay

Around lunchtime we hit Toonumbar Dam

Then onto Cambridge Plateau before coming to the end of the first day alongside the Clarence River

Matt picked a perfect spot beside the Clarence River.
I really liked this spot and I’ll have to return again on another weekend.

That night it was bloody cold. It reckon it got down close to zero.
Luckily I was wearing thermals, and was curled up inside 2 x -5 sleeping bags.

I awoke around 6:45am to find that Matt had left camp to go and take some morning photos.

By mid morning we hit the trails, and made our way for Levuka 4WD Park.
It was on this leg that I lost my UHF Ariel due to the corrugated roads.
Our stop was brief at Levuka as we decided to spend another free night of camping at Tooloom Falls instead

It was much warmer beside the falls that night, so we had better nights sleep this time.

In the morning we mapped a route on my new Garmin and headed into the forestry trails.

It was quite wet and foggy in there and the Grandtreks struggled a little a times with traction in the mud.

It was in here that we descended down a one way route and took a gamble on a Closed Track where we ended up chopping our way through Lantana for the next 4hrs.
As the weather closed in, the track just got muddier and the scenery turned into a jungle.

I didn’t get many photos here as we both had our hands full cutting through thick lantana.

We were both very fortunate that we found another freshly bulldozed track, where we were able to use the Garmin's mapping to double back and direct us to an earlier part of the track.
From here we were able to find our way out.

It was a relief to finally get out the otherside and assess the paintwork.

And below is the Interactive Map from Monday's Trip,......just click and see

Overall we both agreed, that it was a top weekend.

        cheers
        Stewy

          Stewy and Matt,
What a great write up of what was obviously a great weekend. We were at Tenterfield playing golf and Sat morning was -7.5 degrees. From what I have seen here I am really looking forward to the trip to the 2010 GTG. I have booked the caravan in. I am taking it down the week before and leaving it there. Then I am coming back to pick up my bride, pack the camping gear and join the GTG trip. Cannot wait.

Hopefully it's in a better place... where all the little school children can line up and take notes about how things used to be...

                G'day Richo,

Matt and I spoke to the Ranger Sunday arvo at Talloom Falls, and we mentioned how cold it was by the Clarence River on Saturday night.
The Ranger then said that we were lucky that the temp didn't tip below zero for us as it was -6 at Woodenbong.
None of this surprised me as a coulple of years ago I camped out at Girraween over the same June long weekend and we experienced night time temps of -7 and -8.
I remember that trip very well as I couldn't bare the cold to try and shower. It does get very cold in winter around these parts.

                Regards
                Stewy

                  Hi Stewy

We were in the Vic High Country on the Anzac Day weekend last year and the temp at the dawn service at Sheepyard Flats was -6, with our Queensland based camping gear, still rather be there than at work.

                  Regards, Richo.

                    Richo,
The golf clubs WILL be at the GTG. I am positioning my caravan during the week prior and they will be in the van. I am toying with the idea of taking a couple of short irons on the trip to the GTG with LFaR and crew.
Over the 3 months following the GTG we will be on the wallaby in the Flinders Ranges, the three SA peninsulas in SA, Kangaroo Island, and then back to SEQld via the Murray (heaps of courses) NSW south coast (just as many) and then back to the Goldie just before Christmas.
                    Callo
PS My golf handicap is me.
