  • Max,
From the video's I've seen, only Patrols and Wranglers are crazy enough to tackle Ormeau's Tower of Terror. I can't imagine a Prado making it unless it was stolen and very heavily modified.

    On another topic:
After a day out in the Blue Mountains with the family, I took a quick venture down Chapman Pde, Faulconbridge. I didn't go too far; it was a bit late and the family wanted to get home, but here's an interesting spot:

        • Hey Glen

As i have only used a Prado . and you have said only Patrols and Wranglers are crazy enough to tackle Ormeau's Tower of Terror (and many other carzy terrains) it also comes to my mind that these vehicles are serious offroaders however the resell price for prados are far higher compared to Jeep wranglers . are there any huge flaws with Jeeps because fo which they are not able to retian their value.coz the other day i was looking at car sales and there are pretty new models ( 2007 - 2009) with less kilometers for approx $30Grand
90 series, Air lockers , 2'' TOugh DOG Adjustable's (very happy so far), TJM Bar , 9500 lbs OX winch Plasma rope,TX3100 UHF radio, Mickey's MTZ , ARB Air compressor,

The front end is the biggest downfall for the prado but id back a great driver in a modified prado rather than an average driver in a modified patrol etc...

And the flaws with Jeeps is that jeep is not as well built or as reliable as toyota... And toyota has spent a huge amount on convincing australian public over the past 30 years that they are the best so it is a mindset thing as well why they hold there value. market trend. Its like Harley davidson vs honda etc
Front and Rear ARB Air Lockers - Maxxis Bighorn 32inch M/Ts - Black 16x8 Sunrasias - Bilstein shocks - Lovells springs - Duel batteries - Ironman winch bar - Safari snorkel - Turbo timer - Boost guage - 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust - DP chip - Diff breathers - Custom Drawers - Towbar - Cargo barrier - HID spotties - Roof cage - Rear floodlight - Arb compressor - Garmin 1490T with Topos - 12000 Winch - Ozito chainsaw blah blah blah

            • Hello Lockedup.................. yes reliability with Toyota Fair enough ...........however when we talk about off roading i think jeep does have the basic clearance even without the lift of any kind and as you quoted "id back a great driver in a modified prado rather than an average driver in a modified patrol etc..." would that be because in Prados we do have to be skillful because of the limited ground clearance (unless very heavily modified) whereas in Jeep even an average driver can enjoy it because even the stocked jeep Wranlers do have good clearance and powerful front and rear diffs

              • Hey Max,

Depends on what you want to do.

If you just want a play vehicle I think a cheap TJ Wrangler would be awesome. I've always wanted one, but I cannot seriously consider them due too my camping and touring needs, ie...
                - They're a very small vehicle, all short wheel bases, so packing the necessary camping gear becomes is a struggle. A trailer would help, but they also happen to have have a very small towing capacity.
                - The 4.0L engine is reliable but not powerful and consumes a lot of fuel. It also has a small fuel tank, so you won't get far without worrying about the next petrol station.
                - Due to the wheel base being narrow and very short, it can roll over easier when off roading in serious terrain.

The newer JK series (2007+) are better. The short wheel base is safer due to it's slightly wider and longer wheel base. Of course it still has the same limited luggage & small fuel tank so touring would be better done with the long wheel base version (unlimited).

Is that section doable for a Prado (with 2")? The photo doesn't look too bad, but it could be totally different in real life.

                  • Yeah no problem!
That photo was taken on my return trip (going downhill).
When I first came up to this section I just drove up the far left without hesitation.
On the return trip I decided to inspect it, and then crawled down the middle.
I'm not sure about the right hand side though, it's a big step!

                    • Just went on a day trip to Newnes/Zig-Zag today with some friends. Attendees were:

90 Series Prado (mine - see sig)
120 Prado (stock GXL with 2" and 32" ATZ) - PP member: don1
                      2 x GU patrol (stock with 2")
GU patrol (stock with 4" with 35" muddies)
                      Vitara (stock with 1")
Triton (stock with 2") - did surprisingly well at the hands of a good driver

I managed to follow the 4" patrol every where even when the two 2" patrols turned back.... was a good feeling

                          • 6" and 35's? Nah, sounds expensive. I take plenty of delight in showing timid Patrol drivers how-to-4wd with the Prado as is.
